Spellings – ‘er’ and ‘est’ suffix

Remember: If there is a short vowel sound (a,e,i,o,u) before the final consonant (all other letters), it needs to be doubled. Short sound = letter sound Long sound = letter name

e.g. sad è sadder thin è thinnest

Root word / +er / +est
fast / faster / fastest
big / bigger / biggest
great
small
hot
mad
slow
wet
deep

What do you think the difference is between er and est words?

Spelling cards:

Please put your packs into the ‘card changing box’

Spelling sentences - Please tick the sentences you would like to be tested on next week:

a)  The smallest class were the loudest. The bigger dog was the tallest. The slowest dog had the wettest nose.

b)  The rabbit was sadder but the hatter was the maddest. The greatest school is smaller than the rest. The hare was the faster but was slowest in the race.

c)  The rainforest is one of the hottest and wettest places. If you go deeper in the woods you can find the tallest trees. Three is greater than two but smaller than four.

Ø  Turn over two digit cards to make a 2 digit number.

Ø  Turn over a third card to find a number to take away. (extension – a teen or 2 digit number)

Ø  How fast can you count back? (with or without the 120 grid)

Please ask your parents to initial the activities you give a try. If you misplace your sheet simply find a replacement in the red homework tray. Have a good weekend, Mrs P J
