(EDC 685) Practicum/Internship in School Counseling

Catalog Description: A field-based learning experience designed to provide work experience for graduate students in an area of school counseling. Each practicum/internship must be approved by the faculty coordinator/advisor. A practicum/internship seminar will meet weekly to provide university supervision.
The term practicum is used to refer to the first 300 clock hours of supervised experience and the term internship to refer to the second 300 clock hours of supervised experience. Six hundred hours of practicum/internship field experience are required in the masters of education program in school counseling. The practicum should provide experience related to the professional goals of the student. Students must take practicum hours at both the elementary and secondary level. Students should be assigned specific tasks or projects during the practicum/internship experience. Each student will be supervised by a field supervisor who must be a licensed or endorsed school counselor and by a faculty member from the College of Education at GVSU.

Course Standards and Assessments:
To understand the philosophy, principles, and practice of school counseling including the administration and coordination of professional relationships within school systems and professional knowledge and ethical and legal issues in school counseling
· Students will enhance their professional skills in the field of school of counseling
· Students will enhance the their educational and career goals
· Students will complete a supervised experience of 600 hours in which their ability to use knowledge in practice will be assessed
· Students will prepare and submit a portfolio including an initial self-evaluation; a summary of activities completed during the internship that includes documentation of work with technology, assessment, special education and diversity; and a narrative log of these activities as well as a final self-evaluation paper at the end of the practicum experience
· Students will participate in biweekly seminar discussions, offer collegial collaboration and consultation experiences with peers, and present to scenarios from their fieldwork experience during the course of the semester
