Bodice intensive syllabus

Day 1

Morning

Students will start out by learning how to take measurements using measurement chart. Class will then proceed to create a storyboard on the basic block for the bodice front and back.

Afternoon

Class will add shaping to the basic block, base dart, fish eye dart, shape the sides on both front and back. Students will then trace pattern pieces and cut a mock up to fit the body. Homework will be assigned.

Day 2

Morning

Cut and sew mock up that was cut the day before, fit the body. Read the mock up and make any changes to the master pattern as well as the pattern pieces. Analyze the changes and their relationship to the body why they need to take place, the cause and effect of the changes.

Afternoon

Class will now learn about the princess lines and how they are used as a base for shaping woven, non-stretch fabrics. Students will draft two variations of the princess lines using one master pattern for the front and one for the back.

Day 3

Morning

Learn about stretch fabrics and how to take the stretch into account before drafting the pattern. Students will draft a front and back for a tank top using a knit fabric, cut out the mock up along with a binding to finish the neckline and armholes. Sew together the top and finishing it.

Afternoon

Students will learn how to draft a circle skirt and sew it together it must hang for 3 days before hemming. The skirt will have a zipper and waistband any unfinished work will be homework.

Day 4

Morning

Continuing with the bodice students will add a set in sleeve to the previous day’s draft. Students will make the necessary adjustments to the armhole to accommodate the sleeve. They will then draft a set in sleeve, trace the pattern pieces and start cutting the mock up.

Afternoon

Sew together the mock up to learn how to install a set in sleeve.

Day 5

Morning

Address fitting issues by using different measurements to illustrate the where and how to take into account the measurements taken from the wearer. Students will draft a new draft with new measurements as an example of this procedure.

Afternoon

Hem the circle skirt and finish any unfinished work.

Students will be assigned a final exam of an original pant design as in the sewing class as well as a top to match the pants using the same criteria as the tops sewing exam. They will be given 3 weeks to complete the task.

This syllabus is a guide and subject to change based on students abilities. The fit is paramount, until the right fit is achieved class will not go forward until there is a good understanding of how garments fit, the cause and effect of adjustments etc.

Best of luck in the future.
