2013-2014 Highlights

  • Zach Rucas earned 4th at State-Long Jump and 6th-Triple Jump.
  • Boys 4 x 400 m relay of Johnny Kline, Tanner DeLaFe, Jake Carlin and Zach Rucas earned 7th at State.
  • Tristan Slater earned 5th at State-Pole Vault.
  • Jacob Kantzos and Laura Stokes made the AZ All-State High School Band.
  • AMS students AlliyaDulaney, Valerie Ngo, Katie Wilkinson made it into All-State Middle School Band.
  • Esteban Jimenez and Santiago Ortega received 3rd place in Animal Sciences AzSEF.
  • Abigail Howell received 3rd place in Health & Medicine at AzSEF.
  • Connor Schmitt and Brandon Tran received 3rd place Behavioral & Social Sciences at AzSEF.
  • Jacob Gonsalves received the ASU Walton Sustainability Solutions Award at AzSEF.
  • Brian Sefcik, Steve Baron & Derek Stencil received the ASU Innovation Award at AzSEF.
  • Dr. Michael McKelvy received the 2013 AZ Governor’s Celebration of Innovation Teacher of the Year Award.
  • Jazz Band received a Superior with Distinction at State Festival.
  • Jimmy Barrios and Glenn Smith made All-State Jazz Band.
  • Winter Drumline won 8th consecutive State Championship and participated in the World Championships finishing 25th in the country.
  • Winter Guard finished 3rd in State.
  • Cop’s N’ Kids Program Inaugural Book Drive Grand Prize Winners.
  • Top fundraising high school in Kids for Wish Kids Program.
  • AVID won the 2014 Annual School Food Drive Competition through the United Food Bank
  • Erika Thorlton and SavanaLawrey won 1st place in the State Entrepreneurship competition in Tucson. They now compete in the FCCLA National Competition in San Antonio, TX in July 2014.
  • Sabrina Bajc and Hannah Steele earned silver medals in Entrepreneurship.
  • Ahhyeon Choi and JamillahLuepke earned silver medals in Recycle and Redesign.
  • Hailee Alexander and Ariana Swanson earned bronze medals in Recycle and Redesign.
  • Maggie Gorman earned a bronze medal for Front of the House.
  • Sylvia Kokes earned bronze for Cupcake Decorating.
  • Theater received excelled and superiors in monologues, musical solos and duet scenes at the Central AZ Acting Festival.
  • BreannaHushaw will compete in the monologue division at the National Thespian Festival in Lincoln, NE.
  • Shira Schwartz, theatre teacher, received the Cuthbert-Douglas-Armstrong scholarship. One teacher from AZ is selected and sent to England to participate in the British Summer Scholar program for three weeks.
  • AFJROTC Unit earned the highest rating possible, “Exceeds Standards” on their inspection from headquarters.
  • AFJROTC Unit won the Annual East Valley AFJROTC Sports Field Day Competition for the third year in a row.
  • The JV Football Team, for the first time ever, won the city championship
  • Charles Johnson was named CUSD Girls Tennis Coach of the Year.
  • Christine Orr, basketball player, was named to the 2nd team Division I. Selected for All-Star game.
  • Hayley Prior, basketball player, selected as all CUSD Player of the Year. 2nd team Division I. Selected for All-Star game.
  • Ascende del Sole received “Superior” ratings in Jazz and Madrigal division of the NAU Jazz and Madrigal Festival.
  • Ascende del Sole and Amphion received a “Gold” rating at the Heritage Music Festival of Gold in Chicago.
  • Three choir students from the 12 that participated in the SW Regional Honor Choir, were selected to be a part of the AZ All-State Choir (most in CUSD).
  • BHS Academic Decathlon team earned “Most Improved Team” award at the Division I meet.
  • Basha Girl’s Tennis team had a 13-1 record. Most ever for BHS. They won the Division I, Section 2 Championship.
  • David Li was the top winner in the state math contest. David was selected as one of the top 50 to the American Association of Teachers of Mathematics.
  • Sebastian Scouras was selected as one of the top 50 to the American Association of Teachers of Mathematics. Also finished in top 10% in state math contest.
  • Basha Cheer was the Co-Ed Varsity State Runner-up.
  • Mason Andersen, a freshman, qualified for the Golf State
    Tournament.
  • Julie Mitchell, SpEd Teacher, was selected as Educator of the Year from Chandler Mayor’s Committee for people with disabilities.
  • Jaime Arias, a junior, was selected as 2014 Student of the Year from Chandler Mayor’s Committee for people with disabilities.
  • BHS AgriScience was the #1 program in the State.
  • BHS FFA received a “Gold Rating” as a program on the National Chapter Application. Only 3 schools in the state earned this rating.
  • The multimedia technology and film class live streamed 12 live events to the internet.
  • Girls Cross Country—Chandler City Champions.
  • Michelle Block was named CUSD Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year.
  • Orchestra received “Excellent” rating at the Fall Orchestra Festival, Area Festival and State Festival.
  • Five orchestra students made it into Southwest All Regional Orchestra Festival.
  • Orchestra participated in the Festival of Gold in Chicago, IL.
  • Trey Ronayne won his 2nd State Championship in wrestling. He is a 3 time high school All-American and was East Valley Tribune Wrestler of the Year.
  • Robert Latin earned 3rd place in State wrestling and was named to the CUSD 1st team.
  • Jonathan Latin earned 5th place in State wrestling and was named to the CUSD 1st team.
  • Dalis Smith earned 6th place in State wrestling and was named to the CUSD 2nd team.
  • Kamden Krum was named to the CUSD 2nd team in wrestling.
  • Alex Martinez earned 3rd place at State.
  • AMS students Jonathon Gonsalves, Ryan Tran, Truman Idso, won 1st place in the AZ Region of Future City Competition. The competed nationally in Washington D.C.
  • Rich Meseroll, Girls Basketball Coach, was named Coach of the Year for Division I.
  • Girls Basketball had the most wins ever in Basha history with 21.
  • Girls Basketball received the Hi-Health Team of the Week award during the season.
  • Girls 4x100 relay team of McKenna Brown, Cassidy Roberts, Monika Beechum, JazmarieMader placed 3rd in the State Meet finals.
  • McKenna Brown earned 6th at State-100m Hurdles
  • Cassidy Roberts earned 5th at State-300m Hurdles
  • Monika Beechum earned 4th at State-Long Jump
  • Logan Westlake earned 3rd at Sate-Pole Vault
