Test Area

Test a minimum 4 ft. by 4 ft. area on each type of masonry. Use manufacturer’s application instructions. Three test panels are recommended. The first should dwell 1–2 hours, the second 4–6 hours, and the third 12 hours or overnight. After all test panels have been pressure-rinsed, evaluate results and determine optimum dwell time. General application procedures should be determined based on testing results. Let the test panel dry 3 to 7 days before inspection. Keep test panels available for comparison throughout the cleaning project.

Application

Before applying, read “Preparation” in the Manufacturer’s Product Data Sheet for PowerStrip. Do not dilute or alter.

1.  Apply liberally to a dry surface 1/8-inch thick for dwells up to 24 hours and 1/4-inch thick for dwells up to 48 hours.

2.  Allow product to dwell and penetrate the surface. If product dries on the surface, apply a thin coat of PowerStrip over the hardened area and wait 30 minutes to 1 hour before removal.

SPECIFIER NOTE: Depending upon the type of coating being removed and number of coats, dwell time can vary from 30 minutes to 48 hours. Multiple applications may also be necessary.

3.  Remove and collect the product and dissolved material by inserting a trowel, spatula or other paint-scraping tool through the paste and lifting it from the surface. Remove as much as possible. Do not store or collect remover and/or paint residue in metal containers. Use plastic containers only.

4.  Reapply PowerStrip, if needed. Shorter dwell times are usually enough on second applications where only a little paint or coating remains.

SPECIFIER NOTE: When removing multiple coats of paint, a second application directly over the first application (before rinsing) often improves stripping efficiency. Let the first coat dwell for the predetermined time before the second application.

5.  After final cleaning, using pressure-rinsing equipment, and working from the bottom to the top, thoroughly rinse the stripper and solubilized paint from the surface. Use as much water as possible. On ornate or recessed areas, scrubbing rinsed surfaces with a nylon brush will help ensure removal of PowerStrip and contaminants from crevices, grooves, cracks or other recessed areas.

6.  Allow surface to dry thoroughly before any other treatment is applied.

Cleanup

Clean all applicators and equipment with soap and water, or denatured alcohol or similar cleaning solvent. Dispose of spent cleaner and dissolved coatings/contaminants according to local, state and federal regulations.
