Mix N Match Card Sort Activity

Preparation

Print each of the following statements on individual 3x5 cards- prepare appropriate number of cards for group in advance, making sure to include cards from each group

Put labels around room for each category (Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Neglect, Emotional Abuse, Not Abuse)

Instructions

Give one 3x5 card to each trainee

Instruct trainees to find appropriate category for their card, and stand (or sit) with others in their group

When all trainees have found their group, have trainees discuss among themselves, choose someone to read their cards (or read them individually) to the large group, ask questions as appropriate, and provide examples, additional information, clarification, etc.

Physical Abuse

Bite marks, burns

Bruises on soft tissue (cheeks, neck, buttocks)

Injuries that are patterned or have clear outlines

Injury with improbable explanation

Injury with delay in seeking care

Any injury in an infant

Bruises in various stages of healing

Willful harming or injuring of a child

Sexual Abuse

Any sexual act(s)between a child under the age of 14and an adult

The intentional touching or fondling of a child for purposes of sexual arousal or gratification

Having a child touch the perpetrator’s genitals or intimate parts, or the clothing covering them, for purposes of sexual arousal or gratification

Masturbating in the presence of a child

Preparing, selling or distributing child pornography

Engaging a child in prostitution

Any sexual act accomplished using force or coercion

Neglect

Intentional failure of caregiver to provide food, clothing, shelter

Failure of caregiver to provide supervision

Failure of caregiver to provide appropriate medical and/or dental care

Caregiver does not interact with infant or child

Failure of caregiver to protect child from severe malnutrition

Negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child by a person responsible for the child’s welfare

Emotional Abuse

Willfully causing or permitting a child to suffer unjustifiable physical pain or mental suffering

Endangering a child’s person or health

Causing a child to suffer or risk suffering serious emotional damage

Witnessing domestic violence

Chronically humiliating or ridiculing a child

Not Abuse

Reasonable and age-appropriate spanking

A “mutual affray” (fight) between minors

Necessary force used by a peace officer

Bruise on bony area (shins, elbows, knees)

Refusing specific medical treatment for religious reasons

Homelessness

Consensual sexual intercourse between two 14-year-olds
