JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Evidence Technician/Quartermaster
REPORTS TO: Lieutenant
SUPERVISES: N/A
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of a Police Lieutenant, the Evidence Technician/Quartermaster is responsible for physical evidence seized or property otherwise taken into custody. Disposes of non-evidence in a timely manner and maintains control over narcotics, property and monies. Performs other duties associated with the acquisition of supplies/equipment, coordinates and oversees routine building maintenance requirements, monitors and oversees major building subsystems (HVAC, CCTV, access controls, etc.), and performs other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Prepares and tracks incoming and outgoing evidence.
Communicates with the public and various law enforcement agencies.
Initiates the disposal of narcotics and weapons.
Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing, spreadsheet and/or file maintenance programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information as requested or otherwise necessary.
Answers telephone and receives inquiries, providing information based on considerable knowledge or programs and activities, or referring callers to appropriate personnel, as necessary; routes messages or department personnel as necessary, locates and notifies property owners.
Participates in department audits.
Maintains security in evidence area.
Gathers, analyzes, and processes evidence at and from crime scenes.
Testifies in court.
Assists with acquisition, inventory, and distribution of building supplies, equipment, etc., coordinates training/travel arrangements.
Assists with processing of invoices for payment by the city.
Coordinates with vendors, contractors, and specialized maintenance personnel to ensure building repair is accomplished in a most efficient manner.

Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:
Knowledge of procedures for gathering and maintaining evidence.
Knowledge of standard office policies and procedures.
Alphabetization and filing skills.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to type/input data at 45 words per minute.
Ability to work without supervision and to follow directions.
Ability to read and write proficiently.
Ability to operate office equipment such as photocopier, fax, etc.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with city officials, departmental personnel, volunteers, children and citizens.
Ability to maintain regular attendance on the job.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:
Graduation from an approved high school or GED
Knowledge of and/or experience with law enforcement evidence gathering procedures.
Some computer experience required.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is generally performed indoors in an office setting and requires routine bending, lifting and carrying office supplies, books, files and other materials. The incumbent is required to frequently sit for extended periods of time, talk, hear and must have the ability to transport themselves to and from various locations within the Police Department. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various other pieces of equipment. While performing the duties, the incumbent is required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and to reach with hands and arms. Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness. Vision abilities required for this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level is usually quiet or moderate.
Work requires extensive interaction with the general public and may be stressful when dealing with citizens and/or meeting deadlines.
