  • Public Access (Open, Closed, Restricted, Unknown) – Contact PAD-US Coordinator for review options.
  • GAP Status Code (biodiversity, multiple uses, no known protection) – Contact PAD-US Coordinator for review options. Note: BLM, FWS, USFS, NPS review begins soon (NAWPA project).
  • References (Aggregator Source, GIS Source, GIS Source Date)
  • Note boundary overlaps (long term effort) – see large or sliver errors in “Layers” at (internal FLWG tool).

2017 Accomplishments

Federal Lands Working Group

The Federal Lands Working Group (FLWG), a subgroup of the NBG, developed a data standard and organizational strategies for federally owned lands with the publication of an aggregated federal lands geodatabase to meet common agency needs. In FY2017, the FLWG developed an online tool for federal agencies to identify and review boundary gaps and overlaps. This tool provides a platform for the interactive review and integration of federally managed land within the framework of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US). The USGS Core Science Analytics, Synthesis, and Library Program will release a PAD-US update in late 2017 (version 2.0).

The FLWG introduced PAD-US in presentations to the DOI's Office of Policy Analysis seminar series and to the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Coordination Group. Additional briefings for Senate GIS staffers, Congressional Research Service, and Library of Congress were held in early 2017. The map of the PAD-US was featured in the plenary session and map gallery of the EsriFedGIS Conference. The FLWG posts monthly meeting notes, updates, and events to the Governmental Units Community page on the GeoPlatform website.

FLWG Objectives

Current focus:

  • Automate agency lands data translation into PAD-US format.
  • Contribute to the next PAD-US update, published by USGS.
  • Identify, manage or edit major topology overlap errors (boundaries) between agency datasets.
  • Share FLWG goals and accomplishments through outreach.
  • Assess and improve inventory completeness.
  • Assess and improve core attribute compatibility between agency datasets.
