Vacancy
Thank you for finding out more about working for the Fairbridge Programme,Fairbridge Kennington centre. Within this pack you will find lots of information about The Prince’s Trust and the Fairbridge Programme, the young people and what it is like to work with us.
About The Prince’s Trust
Youth charity The Prince's Trust helps change young lives. It gives practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills such as confidence and motivation. It works with 13-to-30-year-olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law.
The Prince of Wales’s charity has helped more than 650,000 young people since 1976 and supports 100 more each day. Last year, 80 per cent of young people supported by The Trust moved into work, education, training or volunteering.
In April 2011, Fairbridge became part of The Prince’s Trust. The Fairbridge programme sits alongside established Prince’s Trust schemes such as the Enterprise Programme which helps young people into business. The united organisation will help around 50,000 young people over the course of this year.
About the Fairbridge Programme
Thousands of young people have given up hope in the future. Outside education, training or employment, they face a range of inter-related problems such as disruption in their home lives and low educational achievement.
Many hide low self-esteem with aggression, drugs, alcohol or involvement in crime. Too often this is all that society expects of them.
The Fairbridgeprogramme believes that every young person has something of value inside them. Our challenge is to help them find it.
We combine long-term personal support with practical learning experiences to tackle ingrained behaviour and attitudes and enable young people to develop personal, social and life skills.
Every programme is tailored to personal needs and lasts for as long as an individual needs support. Our goal is simple: to build self-belief and motivation in the most challenged young people, offering them the foundations for a life full of choices and opportunity.
The work of the Kenningtoncentre has quickly become recognised as the leader in the field of working with disaffected young people by both statutory and voluntary organisations alike in London. We work with other organisations to develop joined up services for young people and already have developed strong partnerships with the Learning Trust, Youth Services and Children’s and Young Peoples Service within London. Additionally we are seeking formal partnerships with schools, social services, youth justice board and homeless hostels, in order to ensure a consistent and co-ordinated approach that identifies those young people most at risk and in need of support.
The Fairbridge programme believes that every young person has something of value inside them. Our challenge is to help them find it.
The work of our London team is targeted overwhelmingly at the ‘hardest to reach’ young people and increasingly aims to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour within some of the most deprived communities in London. We offer these young people someone to believe in them and a chance to prove themselves through a unique combination of long term personal support and challenging learning experiences.
We offer young people a fresh start, someone to believe in them and a chance to prove themselves.
We combine long-term personal support with practical learning experiences to tackle ingrained behaviour and attitudes and enable young people to develop personal, social and life skills.
Every programme is tailored to personal needs and lasts for as long as an individual needs support. Our goal is simple: to build self-belief and motivation in the most challenging young people, offering them the foundations for a life full of choices and opportunity.
Access
All young people take part on Access which involves many areas of development through exciting outdoor and challenging activities, including:
- Forming relationships
- Problem solving
- Goal setting
- Building confidence & trust through challenging activities
- Action planning
- Negotiation
- Reviewing
- How individual actions affect others
The programme
Once a young person has completed Access they are then able to participate in the Programme. All courses are discussed with the outreach and development worker to ensure that they are suitable learning experiences for the young person’s needs, and to set achievement goals for the courses.
The ongoing programme provides a variety of courses, ranging from photography, drama, cooking, film making, employability skills, through to Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA) and other outdoor adventurous activities such as climbing, abseiling, kayaking.
As always most courses have a ‘stealth’ element where we can incorporate learning such as basic skills (literacy, numeracy etc) on a very non-threatening level.
The FairbridgeProgramme changes young people’s attitudes and behaviour
BECKY, 18.
I came to the Fairbridge programme because I wanted to make some changes in my life and the centre was recommended to me as somewhere that could help, so I came down to talk to someone and find out more. I thought it would help me improve my attitude, confidence and who I am as a person so I thought I would give it a go.
I loved the Access, at first I was really nervous but then once we got going it was really good fun. It gave me a really good insight into the Fairbridge programme and also we got to know the staff, who are always there to listen and work with you rather than against you so that you can achieve all your goals. The Access was also a good chance to make friends with other young people.
I have done loads since I started coming to the centre, one of my favourite activities is Canoeing, I was not sure if I could do it to begin with, the boat was tippy so I kept thinking I would fall out. Once I gave it a go, it was like I woke up and realised I could do it! I gained my paddle sport award and really enjoyed it, even if I did loose my shoe.
One of the biggest things I’ve done was a week long residential to Wales, Living Life and loving it. This is the first time I had really been away from home without my parents and it was significant for me as it helped me to really start making the changes in my life. I am now making a conscious effort to stop putting myself down, and now when I start to think I cant do something, I remember the gorge walk in Wales, and tell myself if I can do that I can do anything.
I had lots of fun on the Learn to earn Christmas card project. It was great to be creative, come up with idea’s and get messy. I learned there is no right or wrong when it comes to art, and that it is something else that I can do.
I would like to go on and get a job in a care home looking after the elderly, and do my NVQ in care alongside this. I am volunteering 3 days a week in a care home as a first step, towards my dream of one day owning my own care home.
The Fairbridge programme offers young people a bridge back into mainstream society
Of the under sixteen age group we worked with in 2008-2009;
- 21% of young people at risk of exclusion were retained in education
- 63% who were not in school returned to education
Of the over sixteen aged group we worked with in 2008-2009;
- 36% went into employment/training/education and volunteering
- 48% reduced drug/alcohol activity
Overall for our over and under sixteen age group, these statistics are particularly impressive when the client group we engage with is considered. For instance 77% of the young people we work with have mental health/self-harm and low self esteem issues, 43% have low literacy and numeracy skills, 41% have substance misuse issues and a history of offending.
What we can offer you
A CHALLENGING ROLE
By working for the Fairbridge programme, you will be making a major difference to the lives of local young people. Every year the Solent centre builds self belief and motivation in over 200 of the most challenging young people, giving the first steps to enjoying a life of changes and opportunities. Over the past 20 years we have developed a model which really works. But we are constantly challenging what we do and how we do it: striving to be the best organisation in our sector.
Use your skills
This role will enable you to use a wide range of skills, especially your ability to relate to different people. It goes without saying you will have lots of contact with young people, but you will also meet with your colleagues; referral agents such as Head Teachers, Probation Officers, Social Workers, Connexions staff and other support organisations. Key to your success in this role will be your time management and organisational skills, and most importantly your diary!
The benefits of working for a highly respected organisation

Just as we work hard, when it comes to playtime, the rewards are there to help you enjoy life to the full. Beyond the generous holiday allowance, we also offer a competitive benefits package including:

The Childcare Vouchers received are then exchanged, in whole or part, for the approved and registered childcare services you use
