West Midland Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Training Fellowship award(PhD).

This competitive award covers salary costs, PhD tuition fees, research project expenses and the costs of a training and development program.

  • The project is investigating the translation of health care research into clinical practice, in particular, implementing a cognitive behavioural therapy intervention for the management of low back pain.The fellowship involves the development of clinical skills in the assessment and treatment of spinal patients.
  • The academic supervisors for the project are: Dr Chris Bridle and Professor Sallie Lamb. The clinical supervisor is: Mrs Sandra Jepson, Extended scope spinal practitioner, George Eliot Hospital.

Aug 08-Oct 09: University Hospitals of Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW)

Working as a Research Physiotherapist on clinical trials within the Warwick Orthopaedics team.Warwick Orthopaedics is the collaboration between the academic group at Warwick Universityand the clinical department at UHCW. Experience includes:

  • The Warwick Arthroplasty Trial, funded by NIHR research for patient benefit, is oneexample of a large RCT where I am the lead research associate.
  • Day to day management of large RCT’s including: recruiting patients; preparing andrecording patient/clinical outcome measures; recording/monitoring Serious Adverse Events;updating clinical reporting forms; attending trial steering committee meetings; providingadvice and information to trial participants and the wider clinical/non-clinical team.
  • Attending formal weekly departmental academic training, covering a range of topics fromepidemiology to clinical trial design.
  • Gaining experience from musculoskeletal clinics either with consultants or with theextended scope physiotherapists.

May 08-Aug 08: Leicestershire County and Rutland PCT (Band 5)

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist working in a busy outpatient department. Duties included:

  • Initiating the set up and running of a weekly shoulder class.
  • Prioritising and managing a large case load of patients.
  • Assessing and treating patients within a strict time frame.
  • Delegating work when appropriate to technicians or administrative staff.

Jan 20 - April 08: Nottingham City PCT (Band 5)

Three month fixed term temporary position as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist. Duties included:

  • Managing a busy and diverse caseload.
  • Participating in department audit procedures.
  • Using new technology to record all patient notes electronically.

Sept 2007-Jan 2008: NEC Box Office, Birmingham

Temporary Agency work in a call centre, booking tickets and dealing with customer enquiries.

Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences: funded full time for three years through the competitive West Midlands Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Training Fellowship Award.
