ROJECT PROPOSAL FOR IMPARTING ADDITIONAL LIFE ORIENTED EDUCATIONAL PACKAGES IN DEENABANDHU SCHOOL

DEENA BANDHU is working for all round development of children since 1992. Over the years we have gained very useful insights into child development, learning process in children and about imparting of creative education. In order to extend the benefits of this experience to many more children we have started a primary school for the children of the community. The school accords special priority for girl child education. Since its inspection in 1998 our school is continuously growing as a real creative learning center that provides life-oriented education.

The master plan of our school has listed five additional educational packages to be imparted in 6th and 7th Standard level. They are :

1.  Nutrition

2.  Simple food storage technology

3.  Pollutants and insecticides in food – Awareness

4.  Sericulture dairy farming

5.  Basic hygiene and sanitation

We have planned that these additional life-oriented educational packages may be provided in 6th and 7th standards. We believe that children of 6th or 7th standard will able grasp the contents of this education. The school is stepping into 6th standard in the year 2004 June and we intend to impart our own module of these additional packages. Among the 5 packages we intend to provide we plan to impart (1) nutrition, (2) basic hygiene- sanitation during the 6th standard. The remaining 3 packages namely- (1) pollutants and insecticides in food, (2) sericulture & dairy farming, (3) Simple food storage technology will be given in the 7th standard.

THE MODULE OF ADDITIONAL PACKAGES:

NUTRITION :

Learning about balanced diet is very important because the Indian village food habit is mainly vegetarian and even the non-vegetarians consume meat occasionally once in a week or 15 days. Therefore protein malnutrition and vitamin ‘A’ deficiency causing blindness is very common among villagers. Preparing balanced and nutritious meal with the available indigenous resources will be taught by experts in this field. Suitable communication methods will be followed while giving specific information.

·  Sources of these nutrients and deficiency, diseases.

·  Special information will be given on non-medical indigenous source of nutrients.

·  Understanding that cereal- Ragi (less expensive) is nutritionally superior to Rice – to demystify the myth that Rice is for more cultured people - a social taboo

·  To encourage the use of non-conventional leafy vegetables which is slowly being forgotten in the rural India

·  Diseases spread by unhygienic use of the vegetables( With out properly washing, or use of leafy vegetables grown by use of sewage water)

COMMUNICATION METHODS:

·  Posters, skits, film/slide shows to children, group discussions

·  Field visit to nutrition centers, preparing sprouted seeds.

BASIC HYGIENE AND SANITATION:

Roundworm and Hookworm infections are prevalent in village conditions. Nearly 55% of the Indian population are infected by Entamoeba Histlytica. This is because of defecation in fields specially near the water bodies there by spreading infections through drinking water. Children need to learn personal hygiene from schools as role models are lacking at home with illiterate parents.

Information of practical importance and suitable methods are employed while imparting the education.

Information

·  Personal hygiene – Head lice, Scabies, skin problems caused by fungus.

·  Importance sanitation- flush-out toilets, importance of proper drainage system.

·  Cleanliness in the home environment, location of waste pit, proper disposal of cow dung, hygienic maintenance of live stock.

·  Health problems caused by field defecation- round worm infestation, Hook work infections, Entamoeba contaminations etc.
