Map Assignment
ARCH0600
Introduction to Islamic Archaeology
Professor Ian Straughn
Instructions:
Download the base map (choose either jpeg or PSD formats) from the following link on the course website:
This is an image file and you will need a program such as Adobe Photoshop in order to open the file and complete the assignment. You may obtain Photoshop for free from the university for your personal computer to use when on the Brown system. For instructions on this use the following link:
Once you have opened the map you can use the text box feature of Photoshop (or other program) to put place names on the map in their appropriate position. (one easy way for cities and sites is to use a [.] period followed by the toponym of the place) It is important to pay attention to detail such as what bank of a river the city is located and its proximity to other sites (east of Baghdad or slightly west).
Once you have completed your map you should save it with a file name that contains your own name. Then you should email it to me at as an attachment.
You may collaborate with each other on this assignment. The goal is not to stump you but to have you all to develop a geographical perspective on the regions that we will encounter in this course.
One great resource for this are the atlases to be found in the Rock reference section. You might find the following of particular use.
- Kennedy, Hugh. ed. 2002. An Historical Atlas of Islam. Leiden: Brill
It comes with a great CD as well.
