V1.02/2010

Installation

Log in with administrator rights to the Windows XP machine upon which you wish to install JAWS. You must first set up the workstation to look for the correct location for the license server. Add the environment variable LSHOST=jaws.oat.csulb.edu as a system variable.

How to add the LSHOST system variable:

  • Left-click on START and then click on CONTROL PANEL; Double click on SYSTEM then click on the ADVANCED tab; Click ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES;
  • In the System Variables section (the option box at the bottom of the screen), click NEW to add a new system variable name and value: name = LSHOST and value = jaws.oat.csulb.edu. Note – if you also have SPSS installed on the machine, see the last page of this documentation for special instructions.

How to download the installation files from the server:

  • Left mouse click on START > Run. In the Run box, type in \\jaws.oat.csulb.edu\jaws11$

IF the “Connect to lats.jaws.oat.csulb.edu” screen appears type in the user name and password, and then check the Remember my password option, then OK.

  • Type in the password is jaw$us3r
  • Check the box that says "Remember this password."
  • Select OK.

NOTE: If you run the installation program from the network share on the serverthe installation will not complete correctly.

To simplify the next installation step we recommend copying the file to the root of your hard drive (c:\).

How to copying the files to the root of your hard drive this using a mouse interface:

  • Left mouse click on the EDIT drop down menu, and then choose SELECT ALL.
  • Minimize the jaw11$ on jaws.oat.csulb.edu window
  • Open My Computer (Left-click on START and then left mouse click over the My Computer option)
  • Left mouse click over the drive you want to paste the file to, usually C:
  • Right mouse click to open the options popup menu, then select paste to copy the files to that drive on your workstation.

When not using a mouse interface, use the tab and arrow keys to navigate through the menu options and perform the same operations for this step in the installation process.

  • From your root directory (or from the location you copied the installation file if you did not put it in your root directory). Launch the JawsSetup32-bit OR JawsSetup64-bit executable file to begin the installation process. If you receive a security warning asking “Do you want to run this file?”, uncheck the “Always ask before opening this file” check box, then click on Run.
  • The next screen should be labeled the “JAWS Setup Package.” Select the NEXT option to begin the installation.

You may see the following progress indicator, and then a screen that states you will need to reboot your machine. If this screen appears, reboot, then log-in as administrator and continue the installation process, following the on-screen directions.

If you were required to reboot, the next screen should be the JAWS Install Setup Wizard

  • Click on NEXT when the Jaws Install option loads
  • Check the box next to "I accept the terms in the License Agreement", then select NEXT.
  • From the Choose Setup Type screen, choose Typical, then select Next
  • Select INSTALL and follow the screen prompts
  • When the installation is complete, select FINISH.
  • Click on NEXT.
  • Uncheck the Automatically Start JAWS check box, and then click on Next.

  • Click on FINISH.

NOTE: CSULB Students are accustomed to having a hot key mapped to this application.
  • Right click on the JAWS icon and select PROPERTIES.
  • Left click on the SHORTCUT KEY field
  • Then press CNTRL + ALT + J.

The text "Ctrl + Alt+ J" should then appear in the SHORTCUT KEY FIELD.

  • Click on OK to apply the change
  • Close the JAWS 8.0 Properties window.
  • Log-off to save the preferences.

NOTE: Tech support staff will need to educate students, faculty, and staff who use the server side Assistive Technology to close the application they are using before they log-off the computer system so that the access KEY can be redeployed to the next user of the application.

Tech Note: Installing JAWS and SPSS together

If both SPSS and JAWS are being installed on the same machine, the LSHOST variable must include the SPSS cluster servers followed by the jaws license server ( all four server names must be separated by colons ).

The correct instructions for this step in that configuration are:

Click the New button and add an Environment Variable name "LSHOST" and enter the variable value "spss1.oat.csulb.edu:spss2.oat.csulb.edu:spss3.oat.csulb.edu:jaws.oat.csulb.edu"
