The heading in italics link to the Twelve areas of professional competence have been extracted from the core curriculum statement ‘Being a General Practitioner’ and which will be assessed in you WBA portfolio.
You may like to use the curriculum over view as a self-assessment tool to help you record what you have covered and achieved in each SHO post. This can then be used to then help plan your learning through the VT Scheme.
The self rating scale integrated into the learning needs grid is based on Miller’s pyramid. It tries to represent the stages of learning you go through to become a proficient practitioner in primary care.
AbbreviationKA / Know about / Have some knowledge about this area and/or know about some of the skills needed.
Need to improve your knowledge and skills base to be able to manage patients in this area in primary care. / Novice
KH / Know how / Have a good knowledge of this area and know the appropriate skills.
Able to demonstrate use of knowledge and skills in case based discussions and role-play.
Would need advice and support available to manage a patient in this area in primary care. / Apprentice practitioner
CD / Can do / Have used your knowledge and skill base in this area to manage a patient in primary care. Able to manage patients with simple problems in this area, but would need help and support to manage more complex problems. / Becoming a competent practitioner in primary care
DD / Do do / Have fluently used your knowledge and skill base in this area to manage several patients in primary care without any advice or support / Proficient practitioner in primary care
As you go through the VTS it would be useful to regularly reflect on what you have learnt from your clinical experience, teaching and tutorials, and personal learning, and record this by circling the appropriate skill level for that clinical area and attribute. For example:
- having demonstrated good working knowledge and person centred consulting skills in a role-play case for a lady requesting a TOP you could circle KH for the knowledge base and person centred care attributes for TOP
- having managed one or two patients in general practice with URTIs either as an FY2 or during a GP attachment (e.g ITP post) or on starting your GPR year you would circle CD for both problem solving attributes for URTIs
- having identified a patient with a possible MI when working in GP, appropriately referred them, arranged a ‘999’ ambulance, and then followed them up on discharge with support from your trainer you would ring ‘DD’ for the knowledge base and problem solving attributes for ACS
