Tutor News will be emailed to all students, parents and teachers. Teachers will read out Tutor News at 11.15am on a Monday to their 1st Year classes only.

Class Tutors will sign journals during their class time.

GENERAL – Please read out to ALL 1st Year Students

Ø  As part of our new wellbeing initiative. The school is implementing a merit system starting this October. Teachers will be recording all positive ongoing behaviours on VS Ware- these include

·  Excellent time keeping

·  Excellent organisation

·  Very good attitude

·  Consistently helpful

·  Consistent effort at work

·  Very good team player

·  Excellent Salesian spirit

All students are encouraged to become active in this initiative. We will be rewarding two recipients from each year group, one male and one female with a Don Bosco award each month. The recipients will also receive a shop voucher and a letter will be sent home to parents /guardian to inform them of this achievement. Our new merit board is located next to the tuck shop and will display our awardees for each month. All recipients of this award will go forward for the Don Bosco Student of the Year award in May.

Ø  The Student council are encouraging acts of kindness in the build up to Christmas with a three step project.

·  Step 1 is Soktober where people donate NEW socks of all sizes, colours and patterns in October to benefit the homeless in Limerick.

·  Step 2 is Glovember and Step 3 is Fleecember! -details to follow! Please support!!

Ø  Fireworks are illegal and any student who brings or uses fireworks in the school will receive and automatic one week suspension. This has been authorised by the Board of Management.

Ø  Students are not permitted to phone parents / guardians themselves when feeling unwell in school for parents to come and collect them. Proper procedure must be followed. Any student feeling unwell must go to Mr. Lavan or Ms. Morgan-O’Brien, where they will contact your parents / guardians for you.

Ø  Parents who are planning on enrolling a student for the 2018/2019 Academic Year please send in your completed CAS Application Forms as soon as possible please. We are only accepting 120 students in September and last year we have 173 applicants so we want to see how many places we will have after siblings have applied. Application forms are available from the school office.

Ø  The School has registered to support Irish Autism Action and their Mobile Phone Recycling Appeal again this year. Remember by donating the phones you are also helping Irish Autism Action in its mission to raise the quality of life of people with autism. Phones can be left into the staff room. Ø  Christmas Shoe Box Appeal – We are supporting the Shoe Box Appeal campaign again this year. Application forms will be available from the school office. Boxes can be dropped off to the school office on or before Friday, 27th October 2017. If you cannot fill a box a donation of some of the items on the list would be gratefully appreciated. Ms. Shortt

Ø  Green Schools - Reminder to those involved in planting....meeting today at 1:30 at room 9 to prep containers etc. All new members welcome. See you there!

GENERAL – continued

Ø  A bake sale will be held on Friday, 20th October from 11.00 – 11.15 in the Central Area. All money raised will be donated to the victims (including the family of Zoe Blondelle 3rd Year) of Hurricane Irma in the Carribean Islands. Donations of baked goods would be greatly appreciated. Baked goods can be dropped to the school office on Friday morning.

Ø  On Friday 20th, Ivana Kolic will be holding an induction meeting for our newly elected Young SVP committee. Could committee members please meet in the central area for this induction which will run from 11.15 - 12.35, bring all relevant SVP materials with you. Committee members are Cathal Moane, Arianna Goldberg, Nicole Griffin, Emma Lillis, Megan Browne & Amy Mitchel. (M.Kelly).

Ø  Students who have entered in the Munster Schools Swimming Championships. The Munster Schools Swimming Championships have been postponed until further notice due to a technical fault. Update will follow when new date and venue has been confirmed. Ms T Hartley

Transition Years

Golf will take place on the following dates;

Monday 23rd October & November 6th/13th - Magone/Mazarello. Leaving @ 11.55 & returning @ 2.40. €2 each for golf balls.

Wednesday 18th/25th October & November 8th - Bosco/Savio. Leaving @ 9 & returning @ 11.55. €2 each for golf balls.

Wednesday, 18th October -

·  Remaining 6-7 students to do the First Aid Exam please be in the Central Area at 2pm.

·  Driving lessons resume.

Thursday, 19th October -

·  Brothers of Charity – 11.15 – 12.30 – School Hall

·  Bank of Ireland – DCG Room Open at 1-15 – 1.45

·  Autism Talk for all TY’s in the Study Hall at 3pm

Friday, 20th October -

·  UL/MIC/LIT – Open Day for all TY Students.

Reminders –

Show practice continues Monday and Wednesday 3.30 – 5.30.

Krakow – please bring a photocopy of your passport to the school office.

TY Students will go on Work Experience in 4 weeks time. Monday 27th November to Friday, 1st December and Monday, 4th December to Friday, 8th December.

Students going on Work Experience that need Garda Vetting. Students must be over 16 to be vetted. Vetting forms available on our school website www.salesiancollege.ie. Please complete the vetting form and return to the school office no later than this Wednesday, 11th October so that we can send off the forms. Insurance and other relevant documents are available on our website or at the school office.

There will be a meeting for students who are thinking of studying Medicine on Monday the 6th of Nov at 3:20. Parents are invited to come with their son/daughter to find out all about the HPAT, important deadlines, the costs involved, studying abroad and generally what is required. Please e-mail to book a place. If you’re in 5th year and you went in TY there is no need to go again, the same material will be covered, unless you want to.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering at University of Limerick will hold a ‘Graduate Work Experience’ talk Thursday, the 26th October from 19:00 – 20:00 in the Analog Device Building in UL. The talk is for secondary school students and their parents. This talk will involve former students from LM124 General Entry Maths, LM125 General Entry Physics and LM058 Financial Maths. Each graduate will describe what’s involved in the career and opportunities they have experienced to date. There will be an opportunity to speak one-to-one with the graduates over refreshments when the talk is over. Admission is free but booking is required. Please e-mail if you wish to attend.
