Policy for Comprehensive Examination
(revised June 2004)
Graduate students in Speech-Language Pathology will be eligible to take the comprehensive examination in their final semester of study or the Spring semester preceding a Fall graduation. The examination will be given 2-3 times per year, once in the Fall semester, once in the Spring semester and at the end of the first summer session..
The examination will consist of 275* questions divided into three sections:
Section INormal Processes
Section IIRelated Areas
Section IIICommunication Disorders
A passing grade is 85%.
Comprehensive Examination
The comprehensive is the final academic requirement of all graduate students in Speech-Language Pathology. It will be modeled after the Specialty examination in Speech-Language Pathology required for both ASHA certification and New York State licensure.
The examination is composed of 275* multiple choice questions divided into three sections.
Section I:Normal process, consists of 65 questions related to:
speech science
neuroanatomy
audiology/aural (re)habilitation
Section II:Related areas consists of 85 questions:
professional issues
research methods
dysphagia
elective choice between
Severe Developmental Disabilities and Autism
early intervention
pediatric audiology
cranial facial
Section III:Communication Disorders consists of 125 questions related to:
phonological disorders
language disorders
stuttering
voice
motor speech disorders
aphasia
* This number may be reduced for students who were matriculated in the M.A. program prior to 1995.
