Marler Clark Scholarship – Chi-Chi’s was a popular Mexican restaurant chain from 1975 to 2004, including a location at the Beaver Valley Mall in Center Township. It went out of business following a Hepatitis A outbreak in 2003. The Beaver Valley Mall Chi-Chi’s was the scene of the largest Hepatitis A outbreak in U.S. history, when 660 people contracted the virus and four (4) people died after eating there in October and November 2003. After a long investigation, it was discovered that green onions imported from Mexico were the cause of the outbreak. Marler Clark, the Seattle Law Firm that was lead counsel in the class action suit that followed the incident, has made a financial donation to the former Center High School, which is now being used for this scholarship.

The former Center Area School District and our community were impacted when faculty, staff, students, and family members became ill. Marler Clark successfully settled the claims of 78 victims of the Hepatitis A outbreak. “We were very pleased with the outcome of this settlement,” said William Marler, managing partner of Marler Clark. “Maybe, one of the kids who receive a scholarship from this fund will go on to become a nurse, or even a liver transplant surgeon.
