REQUEST FOR EMERITUS APPOINTMENT

Guidelines for appointment to emeritus status as set forth by the Board of Regents are:

Emeritus/Emerita status is an honor which may be awarded to full-time faculty and professional staff who retire after distinguished and long-term achievement and service to a NSHE institution. Recommendations for emeritus/emerita status will be based upon appropriate review processes at each institution and shall be approved by the President. Normally a minimum of ten years’ service is required prior to conferral of the title of emeritus/emerita status. (Title 4, Chapter 3, Section 43)

Guidelines for appointment to emeritus status as set forth in the University Administrative Manual are:

Emeritus status is a rank afforded to university faculty members and is attained by a promotion taking place after retirement. The qualifications for this rank are measured in terms of the individual’s total contribution to the University, based upon both achievement and service. Normally a minimum of ten years’ service is required prior to conferral of the title of emeritus/emerita. (Section 2,580)

PROCEDURES:

Requests for emeritus status are to be submitted to the Office of the Provost. Normally, requests should be preceded or accompanied by the faculty member’s notice of retirement. For recognition during the May Honor the Best Ceremony, requests should be submitted with a 50-word summary of the faculty member’s career highlights by February 28th.
