Theme ideas

As a whole group we are going to come up with different ideas that could be used as a theme for your t-shirt design.

Write down the group’s ideas in the space below:

Decide which theme you are going to use for your t-shirt design and write it in the centre of the diagram. In the bubbles leading from the middle write down ideas that fit with your theme in the categories stated.
Design Brief

Rough design 1

Use this blank t-shirt for your rough design, showing design and layout. Give an idea of colours to be used and annotate your drawing to communicate your ideas and the thinking behind them. Explain why you have chosen your colours and images. Feel free to use the lines for writing and/or add your own notes anywhere you like on the page.

Final design

Use this blank t-shirt for your final design. Show colours to be used and annotate your drawing to communicate your ideas and the thinking behind them. If you make any changes from your rough design explain why you altered your design in this way. Feel free to use the lines for writing and/or add your own notes anywhere you like on the page.

Financial costings

When designing a product to bring to market cost is an important factor, sell your product too cheaply and you will not sustain your business, but if it is too expensive you will price yourself out of the market and customers will buy elsewhere.

You can use a simple mathematical formula to work out how to price your products as shown below:

Glossary

Materials – cost of t-shirt, fabric paints, embellishments

Overheads –costs of running business (electricity, heating, phone, stationery, delivery costs)

Labour – your time to produce the t-shirt

Profit – mark up for business

This is the most individualized approach because a conscious decision is made about the profit you want from your business. You decide on a satisfactory wage and the amount of time you spend earning it.

Example

£5.00+£2.00+£5.00+ £7.00=£19.00

Materials+Overheads+Labour+Profit=Selling price

per unit

Now work out the selling price for your design, using the above formula and the following costings:

Fairtrade t-shirt = £9.00non fair-trade t-shirt = £3.00overheads = £2.00

Labour = £3.00Profit = your discretion, based on whether you are profit or non profit Other materials = £2.00-5.00 (decide based on how much you have used)
