AGENDA ITEM 5.d.

2014-15 GLOBAL EDUCATION CALDENDAR OF EVENTS (sponsored or co-sponsored)

South Central College - Global Education Committee Event Calendar 2014-15

Overview

One of the Committee’s goals for this year was to create a calendar of events that would span the academic year and complement other events happening around the college. The primary purpose of this work was to create a thoughtful approach to programming that would be promoted far enough in advance to encourage strong attendance.

In general, events and initiatives that promote diversity and global competence are planned and supported by several groups or offices. Most of the activity to support this work originates in the following places:

·  Global Education Committee

·  Student Life and Student Clubs

·  LAPC Office of the Academic Dean (Global Connections Conference)

·  Synapse Lecture Series (Many lectures often support global and/or diversity themes.)

·  Diversity Committee

·  Sakatah Reads

Planning begun Spring 2014 and August 2014 resulted in preliminary planning for several events and for established offerings such as the Global Education groups reads & film series:

·  Global Education Series: Country of Focus for 2014-15: Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam & Thailand – Events, films and book reads to support education about rich cultural heritage and traditions of South East Asia aligning with the 2014 Global Connections Conference emphasis on Laos (Global Ed Comm)

·  Global Social Justice Events – Two events are being planned. The OxFam Hunger Banquet - November Day Without Shoes - April. (w/Student Life & Diversity Comms & Global connections committee)

o  OxFam Hunger Banquet: This is a world-wide activity supported by OxFam International to raise awareness about hunger around the world. This event will be held over a lunch period in November. For this event, 100 people will gather to eat but will be given different food depending on the “luck of the draw”. Most will eat very little while a few will have access to much more. This reflects food disparities in the world.

o  Day Without Shoes: This event involves collecting new or gently used shoes to donate to other parts of the world and culminates in a day where we do not wear shoes to be more aware of the reality of people in other parts of the world who go without shoes every day.

·  Sakatah Reads Event – Co-sponsored by Global Education Committee

·  SCC Annual Common Read for 2014-15 -Poverty- Working Poor Series – Events, panels, discussions and reading groups to support the selected book for the 2014-15 common read, “The Working Poor: Invisible in America” – by David Shipler (w/Diversity Comm)
