MINUTES OF THE LOUISIANA SHERIFFS’ EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT INSTITUTEBOARD MEETING HELD ON MAY 15, 2013 AT 12:30P.M. AT THE OFFICE OF THE LOUISIANA SHERIFFS’ ASSOCIATION, 1175 NICHOLSON DRIVE, BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA.

CALL TO ORDER

Mike Ranatza called the meeting to order.

REPORT ON MIDWINTER TRAINING SESSIONS

A total of 59 sheriffs attended the training sessions held in Bossier, Louisiana. Courses offered were as follows:

  • Court Security
  • Maximizing Data
  • Functions of the State OEP/WEB
  • Violence in Schools
  • Attorney General High Crimes Sex Operations

FUTURE NEEDS/ TRAINING POSSIBILITES

Summer conference training was discussed with several large training sessions using Mitch Javidi for a two hour session on how to operate an office and motivate your employees and a large two hour session led by Sheriff Greg Champagne that will discuss labor related activities. Justice Clark agreed to perform a session on Recent Developments in Criminal Law (one hour). Mr. Ranatza will perform a one hour session entitled Legislative Resume 2013. The goal according to Mr. Ranatza is to have six hours of training at the summer conference. SHERIFF NORMAND MADE A MOTION TO ADOPT THE SESSIONS BELOW AS TRAINING TOPICS TO BE COVERED AT THE SUMMER CONFERENCE IN DESTIN, FLORIDA. SHERIFF WILEY SECONDED THAT MOTION. MOTION PASSED.

  • How to Operate an Office and Motivate Your Employees (2 hour block)
  • Labor Related Activities (2 hour block)
  • Recent Developments in Criminal Law (1 hour block)
  • Legislative Resume 2013 (1 hour session)

The board also discussed expanding for the second year allowing as many as six hours from courses offered by NSA, FBI, IACP, and other approved CLE conferences. LSA will develop criteria for CLE accreditation from our workshops/sessions. The board would seek further information before approving specific courses or conferences.

It is the committee’s desire that the Sheriffs’ Executive Management Institute mandate one hour of ethics training to be allowed for credit for sheriffs with proof in the form of the certificate supplied by the state of Louisiana. SHERIFF NEWELL NORMAND MADE A MOTION TO OFFER ETHICS TRAINING TO BE CREDITIED TOWARD THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS NEEDED FOR SHERIFFS TRAINING. SHERIFF WILEY SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION PASSED.
