SUBJECT:Septic Health Mascot Contest

One of the four components of the Septic Health Initiative isthe Education Program. One of the educational programs main objectives is to contact and educate 5th grade elementary students on the operation and function of the waste systems connected to their homes. Inside the class room, through hands on demonstrations and models, staffillustrates to these students that diminished water quality can take place as a result of septic system misuse or lack of maintenance.

With staff assistance from the N.C. Cooperative Extension Agency, a contest at area elementary schools for the best and most creative mascot for the Septic Health Initiative was held last fall. Deadline for entries wasFebruary 2nd, 2003.It was believed that an identifiable mascot character would help the Initiative relate better with these students and provide more interest in matters of Septic Health.

Students were given information to help them title and illustrate a mascot and additionally explain their drawing and what it meant to them. For those classes that did not receive a live presentation, they were insteadgivenapplication packets to look over and have signed by their parent/guardianfor submission to the selection panel.This took place during the regular education program hour last fall at Kitty Hawk and FirstFlightElementary Schools.

The selection panel consisted of students from the Albemarle Ecological Field Station-an Internship program of the Carolina Environmental Program- University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This panel was tasked with recommending first through third place entries and also an honorable mention application. The selections were completed on February 7th, 2003.

The winners are:

1st place ($100.00)- Jordon Rhodes, "Hank the Septic Tank"- 5th grade, age 11.Kitty Hawk Elementary (Mrs.Sharon Davis' class)

2nd Place ($50.00)- Chelsea Orrell, "Septic-Bob Square-Tank" - 5th grade, age 11. First Flight elementary (Mrs. Evans class)

3rd Place ($25.00)- Brittany May, "Captain Sewage" - 5th grade, age 10. Kitty Hawk Elementary (Mr. Potters class)

Honorable mention-Frances Berslak, age 10 of Kitty Hawk Elementary (Mrs. Edwards Class)

Certificates and monetary awards will be presented in grateful acknowledgment of and appreciation for the time, effort, and creativity invested by these students who created mascot and caption descriptions in the contest. The winningillustrations will be viewed on the projector as each certificate and award is presented the students.

The students and or their parent/guardian have been asked to be present for this presentation. In the event that neither student or parent/guardian are present for this award presentation the student names with corresponding certificate and award will be read aloud and their entry will viewed via the projector.
