Your gift is also important to our fundraising success because it signals your confidence and willingness to invest in this promise to our children. Your generosity will influence others to support this vitally important project. Together, as a caring community, we will ensure our most vulnerable children have the care they need in a warm, secure, supportive environment.” The full letter is attached to this Westwind.

PROGRAM for JANUARY 26th: John Melnick introduced our guest speaker, Jim Bear to speak on “First Nation Growth-Mainstream Opportunity”. Jim spoke to the membership some years back and is paying us another visit. He is a direct descendant of Chief Peguis and a nephew of Sgt. Tommy Prince. He has been involved extensively in community service and in Aboriginal Service, currently with the Southeast Assembly of First Nations.

The topics Jim covered in his power point presentation included:

-Treaties-Nation to Nation – these are peace and friendship treaties not surrender documents

-Canada’s First Nation Genocide Policy from the 1930s

-Injustices to First Nations: Residential Schools; only since 1960 could First Nation people vote in federal elections; devolution of First Nation child adoption services

-1982 Constitution – a Lost Opportunity

-2010 United Nations Declaration on Indigenous Peoples

-Potential workforce of young aboriginals

-Former PM Paul Martin’s involvement with First Nations

-Winnipeg’s aboriginal population: 63,000 represents 10% of Winnipeg’s population; 50% of these aboriginals are under 25 years of age

-Tribal Council Investment Holding Company and businesses it is involved in – Jim listed these

-Southeast Assembly and what it is involved in – the South Beach Casino is an extensive interest

-Mainstream Opportunity–open to partnerships, employment, and investment with First Nations

-The last screen provided a List of Employment/Business Resources with the First Nations

Jim spoke very positively about all people in Canada living in harmony and being of “one accord”. John Melnick thanked Jim for being our guest speaker – he is very insightful and forward thinking as he talks about First Nations’ Growth in investment, education, employment moving forward in this decade.
