DESIGN ENGINEER (ENGINEER 2)
O’Brien & Gere Engineering Inc. is actively seeking a Mechanical Engineer for our Lindenhurst, New York office. The responsibilities of the position include providing design andengineering support for energy and infrastructure projects.The candidate will work with experienced engineers who will provide mentoring and technical leadership.

The Design Engineer is responsible for the timely and accurate completion of projects that are of average complexity or completion of portions of projects that are of above average complexity. The Design Engineer utilizes verbal and written communication skills to maintain a close relationship with the client from the proposal to the completion phase, to confirm that the client receives the designs and opinions described in the contract between the Firm and the client. The Design Engineer will assume increased budgetary, client contact and business development responsibilities.

Knowledge of mechanical systems located within central heating, cooling and power plants found at hospitals, universities, and large apartment complexes desired. Must be familiar with the design and specification of new equipment including pumps, chillers, boilers, controls, fans, boiler auxiliaries, etc. preferred. Experienced with new installations and rehabilitation of existing equipment is favorable.

Ideal candidate will have experience with mechanical system design, technical writing, and engineering studies and cost estimating, and be able to direct others. Individual should be a self-starter able to carry multiple projects from concept through construction. Candidate must be able to perform fieldwork, produce plant layout and detailed design drawings, interpret specifications, incorporate manufacturer’s technical data, and review submittals.

Excellent oral, written communications and computer skills are necessary. Excellent interpersonal skills are a must. AutoCAD ability is required. Some travel required in the New York State area.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:

  • Maintain routine contact with the client during the study, design, and construction phases of a project within the limits delegated by the Managing Engineer
  • Periodically review the schedule and cost of the projects under his or her supervision
  • Maintain that the cost of projects under direct supervision shall be within the stated budgets
  • Prepares qualifications/proposals and conducts efforts supporting business development activities
  • Prepares work necessary to complete contract documents (plans & specifications) for all work on which bids are to be taken
  • Attends bid openings, prepares tabulations of bids and conformed contracts, preparesletters of award to the contractor and prepares construction authorizations for transmittal to the Construction Division
  • Participates in selecting the project team
  • Cooperates and communicates with other engineers, designers, and drafters assigned to the various phases of the project
  • Performs detailed checking of completed work performed under his or her direct supervision
  • Undertakes research, investigation, writing and editing of reports on the findings
  • Performs construction administrative tasks in coordination with Construction Division personnel
  • Applies a working knowledge of the Firm's Corporate Information System
  • Adheres to policies and standards set forth in the Firm's Quality System documents

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering / Marine Engineering
  • Minimum of four years experience with the design of mechanical systems, or operating experience in shore side utilities, or shipboard systems
  • Professional Engineer or FE registration desirable
  • Some exposure / experience with AutoCAD software tools
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems located within central heating, cooling and power plants found at hospitals, universities, and large apartment complexes desired.
