REGULAR MEETING

DECEMBER 16, 2013

Vice President Jack Richert called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. in the Brown Elementary Library.

Members present: Richert, Gill, Ferguson, Cornwall and Whited.

Members absent: Lazere {excused}

Pledge to the flag was given.

13/14-057. Moved by Whited, seconded by Gill, to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of November 28, 2013.

Ayes – 5 Nays – 0

Motion carried.

Public Concerns and Comments:

There were no public concerns or comments.

Communications:

Brown Elementary Principal, Mr. Pengelly, welcomed everyone and introduced the Brown Elementary choir that performed for the Board of Education. Mr. Pengelly also expressed gratitude to the PTO, parent volunteers and the Board of Education for help with the new driveway improvements.

Mr. Pengelly shared the “Bobcat Banner” which is a newsletter put together by the Mrs. Fox’s fifth grade class. He also shared documentation of how the PBS system is working, that office referrals are down 90% from last year during September and October. Mr. Pengelly said the staff is doing a great job with the students and that the new math and reading curriculum for kindergarten is going very well. He said the kindergarten teachers jumped right in and are doing an amazing job.

Trena Szawara arrived at 6:10 p.m.

13/14-059. Moved by Gill, seconded by Whited, to approve the hiring and probationary teaching contract of Joshua Tolbert, as a special education teacher at Huron High School effective December 16, 2013 as presented.

13/14-060. Moved by Cornwall, seconded by Szawara, to approve the Best Practices Incentive Resolution as presented.

13/14-061. Moved by Gill, seconded by Ferguson, to approve the purchase of a bus from Midwest Transit Equipment for the amount of $71,340.00, as presented.

13/14-062. Moved by Cornwall, seconded by Szawara, to approve the online high school program and graduation requirements, as presented.

Board Policy Committee Report:

Nate Cornwall said that they have been working on the recommendation of the online program. He also stated the new EPI Pen mandate will have to be reflected in the district’s policies.

Facility Needs Committee Report:

Jack Richert said the athletic department is going to be recognizing everyone who helped and contributed to the auxiliary gymnasiums costs this Wednesday evening.

Finance Committee Report:

Mike Gill had nothing new to report. He said there will be a budget revision in January and that the committee will be meeting prior to that.

Strategic Planning Committee Report:

Mr. Naughton said that the Central Office staff baked and sent trays of goodies to all the buildings for the holiday season.

LDFA Committee Report:

Jack Richert had nothing new to report; he said the DEQ is working on the North end of the property. He said things are moving forward with Load 1.

13/14-063. Moved by Gill seconded by Ferguson, that the Board of Education approve the accounts payable in the amount of $1,890,378.75.

Superintendent’s Comments:

Mr. Naughton said he had sent the Board members a calendar of events going on in the district. He thanked the Brown staff for hosting the meeting this evening and said that the elementary holiday concerts were great. Mr. Naughton also mentioned a possible Board Workshop on February 1st.

Comments from Board of Education Members:

Alice Whited thanked the Brown staff for hosting the meetings this evening. She said the students did a great job performing tonight. Mrs. Whited also welcomed the new staff and enjoyed seeing the Renton honor roll students in her board packet. She also wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

Trena Szawara thanked Brown Elementary for hosting the meeting and Mr. Pengelly for the information he provided. She said she loved hearing the children perform, that it lifted her spirits. Mrs. Szawara commended the Brown PTO saying they are a wonderful group and wished everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Nate Cornwall thanked everyone at Brown for hosting the meeting and welcomed the new staff members. Mr. Cornwall also wished everyone happy holidays.

Mike Gill welcomed Dr. Tolbert and is glad that we are able to get quality candidates for vacancies in the district. He thanked Mr. Pengelly for the update on all the programs and wished everyone happy holidays.

Alice Ferguson thanked Mr. Pengelly for hosting the meeting this evening. Mrs. Ferguson said she attended the Brown Elementary holiday concert and it was very good. Mrs. Ferguson welcomed the new employees and is very happy with the new high school program to help students succeed. Mrs. Ferguson wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Jack Richert thanked the Brown staff for hosting the meeting this evening. He complimented Mrs. Diserens for doing a great job with the elementary music program. Mr. Richert said that a new mother to the district is extremely happy with the special needs programs offered in the district and that she is very happy with Huron Schools. Mr. Richert wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
