Course Expectations
Respect your peers and your teachers.
Be on time to class.
The following required are materials for class
- notebook
- folder
- pens/pencils
- 3 X 5 index cards(to be kept at home for homework assignments)
Keep all worksheets and other material provided by the teacher in a folder for review and future reference.
Textbooks are to be kept at home. There is a classroom set for students to use in school.
I) Homework
Homework assignments are designed to reinforce classroom learning objectives. Homework will provide students with the opportunity to apply information they have learned.
Each marking period, all students start out with a test score of 100 for homework.
Students will receive a “0" for any missed assignment.
Students may earn half the credit back for completing the assignment at lunch or after school on the same day.
Students who miss homework because of an absence will receive the opportunity to make up missed work.
Homework will be assigned 4-5 nights each week. Classes which meet every
other day will be assigned homework each time they meet.
Students should copy homework assignments into their school issued student organizer.
Parents will be contacted by phone or e-mail when a student repeatedly fails to
complete homework.(3 or more times )
II) Assessments
Quizzes average once a week for classes that meet every day and approximately
every 2 weeks for the 6th grade.
Unit tests average one per month. Testing covers language skills of
listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will be assessed through
dialogues, presentations, projects, written tests, listening assessments and graded speaking activities.
Parents will be notified by phone or e-mail when a student fails a test, fails 1-2
quizzes, is late with a project, or is unprepared for an oral presentation.
Assessments missed due to absences must be taken during “Quiet Study” or during “Office Hours.”

PowerSchool is the online gradebook used by South Orangetown Central School District, which allows parents to have feedback on their child’s performance.
This should be checked often by both students and their parent/guardian to track progress. If you have any questions about what is recorded, please feel free to contact me by phone or email.()
IV)Grading Policy
SOMS WORLD LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT GRADING POLICY
Homework and Class work15% of the quarter grade
Quizzes, Dialogues, Tests and Projects 85% of the quarter grade
Italian 7 and Italian 8 are Italian I which is a high school credit-bearing course. The grades earned in Italian here at SOMS are reflected on the student’s academic record at the high school.
8th graders will sit for a Proficiency Exam in June.
