POSITION TITLE: Health & Safety Specialist DATE OF OPENING: Monday, October 30, 2016

JOB SUMMARY –This part-time position (up to 80 days per year) provides administrative advice and technical assistance regarding health and safety management to agency officials; conductsmock OSHA inspections to provide officials with alerts regarding safety issues and needed retrofits. Formal training and job shadowing will be provided prior to full transfer of duties from incumbent to new consultant. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manageservices relating to health and safety management, including assessing member needs, developing knowledge base, marketing, contracting, delivering services, and strategic planning.
  • Communicate with school officials regarding state mandated documentation and reporting, project approvals, deadlines relating to health and safety projects and levy planning.
  • Conduct two walkthroughs (mock OSHA inspections) per district per year and file a complete report following each walkthrough/inspection. Each building in the district will be inspected at least once per year. Consultant will review, evaluate, and advise regarding record keeping, including written management plans, checking for required health and safety training documents, health and safety inventories, completion of state required forms, and discuss upcoming health and safety related projects.
  • Assist school districts in identifying, prioritizing, and scheduling health and safety capital projects, by building, and evaluating projects for eligibility for Health and Safety capital expenditure revenues.
  • Assess member organization professional development needs; initiate, coordinate, and conduct training as appropriate in health and safety management administration and building management, including an annual “town hall” meeting in collaboration with MN Department of Education.
  • Oversee contract with environmental health & safety management firm (IEA), including meeting with regional manager quarterly or more often as needed, evaluating quality of service (customer satisfaction).
  • Work with MDE and other regional service providers in future development of inclusion criteria for capital expenditure health and safety projects.
  • Obtain specialized training as needed to maintain expertise and knowledge of current requirements in public facility health and safety.
  • Collaborate with other SSC staff in member communications and service promotion.

Qualifications, Education, Experience: Training required and costs covered by SSC: OSHA general Industry 101 (30 hours) and machine guarding(approximately 15 – 20 hours). Additional: Organizational administration/management experience, minimum three years required; facility management experience; specialized training in health and safety management. Demonstrated knowledge public facility issues; experience applying skills in planning, organization, leadership, communications (written and oral). Physical Requirements: Physical requirements: Able to drive a car, travel and attend meetings; lift and carry light loads (up to approximately 20 lbs); flexibility to move in and around tight spaces; sit at a workstation and operate a computer.

COMPENSATION: Commensurate with industry standards and local market, based primarily on experience and training and within Southeast Service Cooperative wage guidelines, anticipated range of $30.00 to $33.00 per hour. Benefit details provided if interviewed.
