Expectations for Outdoor Program Student Director

This position is an opportunity for you to go above and beyond as a part of the Outdoor Programs trips and events for students that are stoked about the outdoors. You will play a vital position to the Outdoor Program and its involvement with the SOU campus community.

As a manager for the Outdoor Program you will work in collaboration with the Outdoor Program Coordinator and other Outdoor Program Managers, attend the weekly council meetings, create and implement staff trainings, coordinate upcoming activities and trips and promote the inclusive community that the Outdoor Program fosters.

Core Responsibilities:

·  Management

o  Be the Chief Empowerment Officer for the Outdoor Program

o  Be the Chief Relationship Officer for the Outdoor Program

§  Oversee the Outdoor Program trip process from beginning to end

§  Oversee the trip planning process. This requires:

§  Review and approval of trip planning docs

§  Intimate knowledge of what Outdoor Program trips are taking place and being planned

§  Providing guidance and supervision to trip developers and program managers

§  Ensure accuracy with the trip planning process and documentation

§  Timeliness

§  Responsible program design

§  Compliance with general operating manual

§  Compliance with permits

o  Coordinate OP council Meetings

§  Inform managers and students wanting to be more involved

§  Set agenda

§  Implement actions decided upon at meetings

§  Work with staff to achieve projects

o  Be the leader for all students involved in the Outdoor Program

§  Role modeling, guidance and support for all students involved in the Outdoor Program

·  Quality

o  Reports to Outdoor Program Coordinator

o  Promote high quality in all OP events

§  Participate in select trips

o  Communicate regularly with the OP Coordinator

o  Read and understand Outdoor Programs general operating manual

§  Ensure compliance with operating manual on all Outdoor Programs sponsored trips and events

o  Understand the functions of all staff

·  Special Projects

o  Coordinate OP community gatherings

§  Organize potlucks, or similar events, at least 4 times per year

§  Honor graduating seniors

·  Time Requirement

o  Between 4-8 hours/week (hours are flexible)

§  Time will be spent between Outdoor Program office hours, mentoring trip planning, trip leading, and the other Outdoor Program Student Director duties

§  Attend biweekly Outdoor Program Council Meetings: Tuesdays at

Minimum Qualifications:

o  Must be a student at SOU

o  Work well as part of a cohesive team

o  Be accountable for position expectations

o  Have good interpersonal communication

Other Essential Functions:

·  Understand and fulfill duties of Outdoor Program office staff

·  Assist with special projects within the Outdoor Program

·  Keep the Outdoor Program clean
