Who would benefit from
this workshop?
The approach that will be taught was actually designed for children and adults who have challenging behaviors associated with sensory processing issues. It is an important alternative for people who have/are
• learning differences
• autism or autism spectrum disorders
• ADD or ADHD
• pervasive developmental disorders
• mental retardation or
• related conditions.
It is indicated when someone has/is
• learning differences
• self-stimulatory behavior
• self-injurious behavior
• stereotypic behavior
• explosive behavior, predictable or not
• impaired learning, an appearance of being out-of-sync with their situation, or not having the ability to catch on to what they are experiencing
• impaired, delayed, or intermittent receptive language
• no, little, or very slow improvement with other approaches
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Laura Barker, MS, OTR is an experienced clinician and educator. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University and a master’s degree in Education from the University of Michigan. From 1977 through 2002, she worked for the Farmington Public Schools in Michigan, gaining extensive experience treating a large variety of age groups and disabilities including sensory processing disorders. Laura is currently teaching courses on sensory processing involving the Ready Approach, developed by the late Bonnie Hanschu. As a Senior Ready Associate, Laura has been recognized as one of a select group of professionals across the country who has demonstrated advanced expertise in using and teaching the principals and techniques associated with the Ready Approach.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Participants will learn:
· How to interpret challenging behaviors, such as aggressions, self-injurious behavior, and self-stimulation, from a sensory perspective.
· How sensation affects brain chemistry and circuitry and how to incorporate them into daily life when, where, and how they are needed.
· A basic understanding of our own adaptive brain driven responses and how this relates on the spectrum of maladaptive responses including autism and related disorders.
· How to promote wider use of sensory techniques by helping others understand the rationale behind the Ready Approach.
· To understand how to create optimal sensory environments to promote learning for all people, whether they have disabilities or not.
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
A Certificate of Attendance will be given to participants for 6 contact hours.
