I am pleased to announce that the preparations for the Fourth Annual Bulgarian Arts Festival are well underway!

The Bulgarian Arts Festival is a non-profit organizationaimingto present the best of Bulgarian traditional and modern artistic expressions and promote Bulgarian culture among Bulgarian-Canadians and the broader Canadian audience. The Festival includes performances of renowned Bulgarian artists who live in Bulgaria, Canada, and other countries in the world.

Within only three years, the Festival has become the mosteagerly anticipated cultural event for the Bulgarian Canadian communities in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. This speaks to the quality of the Festival as well as the importance of Bulgarian culture to the Bulgarian Canadians.

“Balkan Echoes” is the theme of the Fourth Annual Bulgarian Festival. It is a celebration of the uniqueness of our Bulgarian spirituality, the vitality and resilience of our spirit and values. For two weekends Bulgarians in Toronto, their families, friends and the broader Canadian audience will have the opportunity to live the magic of our unique cultural expressions – from the invigorating musical rhythm of our traditional music to the amazing modern jazz and fusion interpretations of the iconic Bulgarian musician StoaynYankulov-Stundji with his Jazz Trio “Zone C” and Anton Apostolov’s Green Sky Project. An authentic folklore evening, featuring the renowned folk singer Irena Nedelchevawill showcase the amazing vocal techniques of our authentic folk singing.

This year again we will offer a movie and theatre evening. A soul-searching theatre performance”I thank you, Love” by Ivaylo Dimanov and an emotionally intense Bulgarian movie, “Jivi Legendi (Living Legends) directed by Niki Iliev will remind us of the special Bulgarian insightfulness in interpreting the complexity of our human emotions and feelings.

A photo exhibition “Voices and Images from Bulgaria”- created and curated by Martin Koenig, Director of the Balkan Arts Centre in New York will take us on a journey to what makes Bulgaria special to us and others. To go a step further, a two-hour folklore workshop will provide the space for sharing and reflections on the uniqueness and richness of our culture. Above all, “Balkan Echoes” will be about those special “echoes” inside us that set us apart as a culture and connectus as Bulgarians.
