Plants Enhancement Activity – PLT08

Habitat Development for BeneficialInsects for Pest Management

Enhancement Description

Establishment of habitat to attract and supportpopulations of beneficial insects that providenatural suppress of undesirable insects or otherpests. Beneficial insects used for pestmanagement include insect arthropod, predatorsand parasitoids. Habitat requirements includeshelter and food that attract and supportbeneficial insects. These can include trap cropsand insectary strips (both permanent and

annual.)

Task: States need to define species suitable for Beneficial insects

Washington NRCS, eFOTG, Sec I

AND

UsePlant Materials Tech Note 1, Conservation Seeding and Planting Guide for WA,eFOTG, Section I/Reference Lists/Tech Notes by Discipline/Plant Materials, to find plants adapted to your specific site conditions.

In Tech Note 1 look for links to following publications and spreadsheets:

  1. Master Species Characteristics, Adaptation, and Attributes Spreadsheet – This spreadsheet alphabetically lists tree, shrub, grass, forb, and wetland species found in Washington. Plant characteristics, adaptation, and attribute information, e.g. growth form, minimum precipitation, seeds/lb, etc. can be found. It also contains a MLRA table identifying key native plants per MLRA. NOTE -If link to Master Species spreadsheet is not working, the spreadsheet is also located in eFOTG in a folder at the bottom of the Plant Materials Tech Notes section called“Plant Materials Technical Note 1 Spreadsheets”.
  1. For Western Washington Seeding and Planting Recommendations use the publication - Pasture and Hayland Renovation for Western Washington and Oregonwhich can be found at

Also for Western Washington, a Species and Rate Calculations spreadsheet can be accessed via a link in Tech Note 1 or by going to the folder at the bottom of the Plant Materials Tech Notes section in eFOTG called “Plant Materials Technical Note 1 Spreadsheets”.

  1. For Eastern Washington a series of spreadsheets respective of precipitation zones has been developed. Each precipitation zone has suitable species and seeding rates listed for forage production, erosion control, habitat improvement/restoration, and filtration. These spreadsheets can be accessed either through links in Plant Materials Tech Note 1 or in the Plant Materials Technical Note 1 Spreadsheets folder located in Section I of eFOTG in the Plant Materials Tech Notes folder.
