All performers and competitors are encouraged to bring their own marching snare drum and marimba. However, there will be a marching snare drum, 4 1/3, and a 5-octave marimba provided.

An individual has the option of registering for both marching snare drum and marimba. The entry fee will still be $25 per entry. All checks need to be made out to the Lamar Percussion Society.

MARCHING SNARE DRUM COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS

The solo MUST be a rudimental snare drum solo. It can be any rudimental snare solo of your choice.

MARIMBA SOLO COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS

The solo MUST be a marimba solo and must be performed on a marimba. It can be any two-mallet or four-mallet marimba solo of your choice.

GUIDELINES

FEES______

The ensemble fee is $75 per school. Each school can enter as many ensembles as they would like.

The solo competition fee is $25. An individual has the option of competing in both the snare drum and marimba categories. The $25 fee will cover both the snare drum and marimba solo competition fees.

All participating students and directors will not have to pay the general admission fee of $5.

Please make out all checks to the Lamar Percussion Society.

All entry forms must be submitted by April 11, 2014, so that we can set the daily schedule and send it out to all participants as soon as possible.

The roster form must be completed and submitted at the time of application and payment.

Participation fees are non-refundable.

ELIGIBILITY______

The solo competition will be is open to all middle school and high school students. The ensemble competition is open to all middle school and high school percussion ensembles. The solo competition and ensemble competition will be divided into two classifications: Middle School and High School. All participants must be full-time students at the school they are representing.

INSTRUMENTATION______

You must provide your own electronics if you should need any for your performance. All schools and universities are encouraged to bring their own equipment. Some large equipment may be provided as per request and with permission from the host. Any request to borrow equipment needs to be submitted immediately. We will provide some assistance with moving your equipment, but our staff will be very busy throughout the day.

PERFORMANCE______

Time Limits of Performance

Middle School and High School solo Competition: 10 minutes

Middle School and High School Ensemble: 15 minutes

There will be a 5 minute window on both sides of each performance for set-up and break-down.

JUDGING______

Judging will be based on PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS (quality and repertoire of the performance); and GENERAL EFFECT (musical effectiveness and coordination of the musical program. The judge’s scores will be averaged to determine the final score.

PERFORMANCE QUALITY

Musicianship, blend and balance, segment clarity (rhythmic), uniformity of techniques, ensemble cohesiveness, musical content, technical content, simultaneous responsibility, clarity of intent.

GENERAL EFFECT

Communication, musicianship, creativity, blend and balance, excellence as it relates to effect, expression, idiomatic interpretation, musical content, pacing/continuity, impact/resolution, range of effects.

All solos and ensembles must stay within the allotted time designated for their performance

All individuals and ensembles MUST be at the ready position outside the competition room five minutes before your performance time.

WARM-UP______

All individuals and ensembles will be allowed to use the parking lot or any outside space to warm-up throughout the day. The rehearsal hall will be used for the pre-performance warm-up for each ensemble.

There will be warm-up areas inside if the weather becomes an issue.

You must fill out a separate ensemble entry form for each competing ensemble. All checks need to be made out to the Lamar Percussion Society. Each ensemble is limited to one or two songs, as long as they fit in the time frame of your performance. If you have more than one ensemble representing your school, you must fill out a entry form for each competing ensemble.

You must submit your roster sheet along with the entry form.
