To tell kids

Guys: WARNING… Pornography is pretty generally accepted. This is one of the things that is culturally a deep-rooted area of sin… women are objects. It’s not quite the same as here, it’s more of a leftover attitude from ancient Incan religions that raped and used women as a piece of property. Within the church there is not the same issue as here or access to it, but in the world, it is just a part of life. You will see it on magazines and newspapers, posters and calendars on the street corners, in stores, restaurants… just be aware and guard your eyes… BOUNCE. 

  1. DONATIONS Our main contribution to the people of Peru will be our time and service so material donations are not the focus of this trip. At the sametime, we will have an opportunity to donate or leave behind any clothes, work gloves, shoes, etc. that we choose. This will be totally voluntary on your part and nothing is expected. These items will be given away to folks in need like local orphanages or volunteer leaders by the Peruvians. If you would like to bring 1 other special itemfor donation, please keep it simple and compact. Sports equipment is always greatly appreciated, bed linens, Spanish Bibles, toys for kids, toiletries like soap, shampoo, small toys and stickers, coloring books, etc.

The following is a sample itinerary for our Peru short-term missions program for 2007. We emphasize that this is a tentative schedule and might be altered depending on a number of factors, i.e. flight arrival and departure times, length of trip, etc. It may be necessary to make changes as we move closer to your trip dates. We encourage you to go with a teachable spirit and an attitude of flexibility. Life in a developing country can be very challenging and circumstances might call for you to adapt to changing conditions. It’s a good idea to go with little expectations other than these:

1)Young Life will never put you in an unsafe situation.

2) The Young Life staff in the receiving country will do everything they can to make your experience a positive and powerful one.

3) If you go with an attitude of humility and the heart of a servant, you give the Lord great opportunity to speak and to minister, both directly as well as through the Peruvian people.

Enjoy this opportunity to partner with the Peruvians for the Kingdom of God. Learn from and teach each other, with the heart of Christ and the love of God.

Take time to greet, speak and fellowship. While the work to be done is very important, the way you interact with the Peruvians will either further your objectives or undercut them. Since the Lord Jesus has brought you to Peru, let His example lead you.

We will be whistled at, called out… just keep walking. Guys, look protective and it will help.

We can all be praying for the deep roots of this in the Peruvian culture, for the attitudes that accompany it towards women, and for the spiritual bondage that accompanies it.
