Item: / 5.1 Operation SafehouseAttachment: / None
Background: / Operation Safehouse is a runaway shelter for teens in crisis. Operation Safehouse provides a place for teens, especially when they feel they are in danger. Operation Safehouse has two locations. One shelter is located in Riverside and the other is in Thousand Palms. Opeartion Safehouse also provides counseling with the teens and families to rebuild the connection and relationship. The shelter provides 21 day assistance to the teens in needs and promotes parenting classes even after the clients graduate. Operation Safehouse has also partnered up with RTA, so a teen in crisis will have safe transportation to the shelter. Operation Safehouse is a wonderful resources for families and teens in need.

Recommendations: / Staff recommends that the Youth Commissioners inform their councils about the program and discuss opportunities of becoming involved or in other case further involved.

Item: / 5.2 Operation Safe House- Stuff the BusAttachment: / None
Background: / Throughout the months of October and November, the Youth Commission sponsored an Operation Safe Help Supply Drive to benefit the Stuff the Bus event for Operation Safe House. The Youth Commission collected boxes full of items to donate to Operation Safe House. On November 6, 2014, there were various drop-off locations throughout the county of Riverside. The final stop by the bus was at the Riverside Plaza.

Recommendations: / Staff recommends that Youth Commissioner’s discuss their council’s stories of how they thought the event went and ideas for next year.

/ 5.3 Youth Advisory Council GoalsAttachment: / None
Background: / Each year all five district Youth Advisory Councils select goals that they will seek to achieve during the year. Based on the goals that each council selects, they will plan, coordinate and volunteer in a variety of events that seek to meet their council goals. At the end of each term year the council will report on their achievements in correlation to their council goals in the form of The Youth Commission Annual Report, which will be reviewed and filed by each County Supervisor’s office.
Recommended Action: / Update
Recommendations: / Staff recommends that those district’s which did not state their goals at the last Youth Commission meeting do so at this meeting. Each commissioner should report their respective council goals for the 2014-2015 term year. In addition, Staff recommends that each commissioner also discuss why the goals were chosen and how the council plans to achieve these goals throughout the year.

Background: / Youth in Government Day was held on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Youth in Government Day was designed to educate students about county government, how it works, and the hundreds of career opportunities within local government. Students are paired up with county professionals (Department Directors and Elected Officials) in their field of interest and are able to share a day at work. This year there will be two locations for Youth in Government Day: First, Second, Third, and Fifth District will be meeting in Riverside. 4th district will also have their Youth in Government Day in the desert next year.
Recommended Action: / Discussion
Recommendations: / Staff recommends that the Youth Commissioners discuss their personal experiences, as well as those of their council members. Commissioners should indicate their favorite part of the event, and what ways they think can help improve the experience.

/ 5.5 Youth Summit TopicsAttachment: / None
Background: / The Youth Summit is a day of dialogue in which all students from various areas of Riverside County come together to express their ideas and concerns regarding the sensitive youth related topics that are to be discussed that day. Speakers will inform the youth of their personal experiences as well as bring to their attention aspects of the differing issues that they may not have yet recognized. During the event participants have the opportunity to hear from a variety of speakers while also participating in engaging workshops that focus on surrounding issues on the selected topics.

Recommendations: / Staff will be updating the Youth Commissioners on the selected Youth Summit items for 2015.
