Role Title: Security Officer

Reports To:Senior Security Officer-Southland Hospital

Directorate:Building & Property

Direct Reports: Nil

Location:Security Officers will be expected to patrol the Southland Hospital Siteand may be required to travel to Lakes District Hospital, Dunedin Hospitalor other sites as required.

  • To provide a safe work environment for all staff, patients and visitors. Protecting property and the interests of the Southern DHB.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
Essential Criteria
  • Ability to work unsupervised as required and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrate sound interpersonal and communication skills.
  • All Security Officers will maintain a courteous and professional attitude at all times.
  • All Security Officers must have excellent written, verbal, and computer skills.
  • To participate in an approved Security training course, or undertake a relevant Security training course as directed by the Southern DHB.
  • Be able to read write and speak English to a standard which will enable them to understand instructions, both written and verbal, and to write clear incident reports.
  • Be able to demonstrate that they can act independently, that they can be courteous, helpful, tactful and culturally sensitive, and can also be assertive when the situation demands.
  • Always observe strict confidentiality with regard to any privacy issues that may arise while on site.
  • Be able to demonstrate that they have excellent observation skills and are alert to detail and the unusual.
  • Have the ability to identify potential hazards, and be able to take appropriate action to prevent or reduce problems before they arise.
  • Hold a current “full” [Automatic and Manual] Driving Licence.
Experience/Knowledge
  • Basic computer skills
  • Must possess the ability to convey themselves both verbally and in the written form
  • Demonstrate the ability to adapt and engage in new tasks related to security when necessary
  • All Security staff are expected to have a good working knowledge of the security protocols and Health and Safety procedures put in place.
  • It is expected that all officers become familiar with and implement procedures once they have been introduced.
  • Acquire and utilise the necessary legislation relevant to working in security within a Hospital setting.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES / DELIVERABLES / EXAMPLE MEASURES
Training /
  • Be restraint trained and to undertake safe restraint training and revalidate in accordance with relevant policy.
  • Attend internal training requirements, which are provided by the service.
  • Assist in Code Black First Response Team training as required.

  • Attend Safe Restraint / Re-validation training.
  • Undertake physical restraint of patients, within approved protocols, as requested by Southern DHB staff.
  • Meet training requirements for the role.
  • Support and assist new staff during orientation to role.

Rostered Duties /
  • Required to be able to competently work all shifts (Rotational – Morning, Afternoon and Nightshift)

  • Work rosters and shifts prescribed by the Senior Security Officer

Daily/Specific Duties /
  • Respond to Fire Emergency calls.
  • Escort staff, patients, money, valuables and medications as required
  • Participate in judicial hearing attendance as rostered.
  • Use monitoring and surveillance equipment in an appropriate way to assist with site security and safety.
  • Undertake regular patrols of the facility, to provide a deterrent to would be problems, and gather information, which may indicate where preventative measures could be implemented.

  • Attend incidents as required.
  • Regular prescribed patrols of both sites.
  • Security has the expectation of being punctual and reliable. This is vital to providing our service
  • Achieve 79% benchmark for patrols.

Reporting /
  • File written reports on major issues, or at the request of the Senior Security Officer, using the Southern DHB Incident Report procedures.
  • Report any issues related to security, safety or risk.
  • Any other irregularities in respect of Southern DHB property, vehicles, staff or visitors re to be reported.

  • Logbook kept current and concise.
  • All events reported appropriately.

Other /
  • To comply with all Southern DHB rules, policies and procedures including the Code of Conduct.
  • Undertaking other tasks related to security as requested.
  • Have undertaken an annual performance review.

  • Presentation is very important and a strict dress code is to be adhered too.
  • Feedback from Senior Security Officer, Team Leader, Service and General Manager.
