A RESOLUTION honoring the work of the Sunshine Seniors.

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of this body to acknowledge the contributions of groups within the Commonwealth who enrich the lives of Kentuckians; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors are the largest organization for African-American senior citizens in the Commonwealth, boasting more than 160 members; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors were established in 1997 with a mission to enhance the livelihood of seniors through community involvement, recreation, arts and crafts, and travel; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors seek to enlighten the path for others to follow; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have provided annual scholarships to African-American achievers; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have participated in a volunteer summer reading program for at-risk children; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have sponsored 32 boys, enabling the boys to attend summer camp; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have volunteered for the Clothe-A-Child Christmas program; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have contributed to the angel tree program for the children of women incarcerated at Pee Wee Valley; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have assisted victims of domestic violence through the Women and Children Agency; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have contributed necessities for the residents of the James Taylor Nursing Home; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have donated 50 dolls from their arts and crafts division to the Home of the Innocents; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have contributed to the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have contributed to the Saint Williams Adult Day Care Center; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors contribute to the health and well-being of other seniors by providing blood pressure screenings at senior institutions; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors continue to make valuable contributions to the citizens of Jefferson County and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the Sunshine Seniors have named Representative Reginald Meeks as an honorary member;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. That this honorable body does hereby express its genuine appreciation to the Sunshine Seniors for their tireless and diligent devotion to senior citizens and all citizens of the Commonwealth.

Section 2. That the Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Sunshine Seniors at 1800 West Muhammad Ali Boulevard, Louisville, Kentucky 40202.
