Course Description:

Designing and publishing web documents. Exploration of tools available for creating and editing web documents. An introduction to designing and publishing web documents. Includes basic markup language, hyperlinks, tables, frames, images, and forms. Exploration of tools available for creating and editing web documents. Course emphasizes web page/site design and development with an application software tool. (College Catalog description)

Pre-requisite or Co-requisite:

Competency in desktop operating systems, file management, and computer applications or departmental approval.

Instructional Methodology:

In-class section - The course will have both lecture (50%) and lab (50%).

Distance section – Students will use an online course management system (Blackboard or equivalent). Students will be able to use the CIS open computer labs to complete the assignments.

Course Rationale:

This course is a beginning course about web page/site development and is a required course in the Web Programming A.A.S. Degree Program and the Web Developer Specialist Certificate.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course, you should be able to:

·  Apply Web design concepts and techniques to plan, create, test, publish, and maintain Web sites.

·  Apply a Web development systems approach to develop Web sitesUse the WWW as a repository of the latest information in an ever-changing discipline.

·  Design web sites with the following steps:

o  Define the purpose.

o  Identify the audience.

o  Design the content.

o  Design the structure.

o  Design the Web pages.

o  Design the navigation structure.

·  Design, develop, and evaluate Wweb pages containing hyperlinks, lists, tables, frames, forms, images, & dynamic effects.

·  Test, manage, and publish web sites.

·  Integrate databases with a web site.

·  IExplore mark-up and scripting language dentify, not create, XHTML elements and JavaScript code on a web page.

·  Compare & contrast various web development tools.

Course/Class Policies:

Academic Integrity

A student is expected to complete his or her own projects and tests. Students are responsible for observing the policy on academic integrity described in the c Current ACC Student Policies Handbook, and the College Catalogunder “Student Discipline Policy, Section C”.

“Acts prohibited by the college for which discipline may be administered include scholastic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating on an exam or quiz, plagiarizing, and unauthorized collaboration with another in preparing outside work. Academic work submitted by students shall be the result of their own thought, research or self-expression. Academic work is defined as, but not limited to tests, quizzes, whether taken electronically or on paper; projects, either individual or group; classroom presentations, and homework”.

The penalty accessed will be in accordance with the current policy stated in Administrative Rule, Student Standards of conduct and Disciplinary Process, Rule 1.04.006 ACC Student Handbook policy. See http://www.austincc.edu/handbook/policies4.htm for more information..

Instructor may define academic dishonesty and the actions.

Incomplete

A student may receive a temporary grade of “I” (Incomplete) at the end of the semester only if the student satisfies ALL of the following conditions are satisfied:

1.  The student is unable to complete the course during the semester due to circumstances beyond the student’stheir control.

2.  The student must have earned at least half of the grade points needed for a “C” by the end of the semester.

3.  The request for the grade must be made in person at the instructor’s office and necessary documents completed.

4.  To remove an “I”, the student must complete the course by two weeks before the end of the following semester. Failure to do so will result in the grade automatically reverting to an “F”.

Attendance / Withdrawal Policy:

Students are expected to attend all classes. Instructor holds all students and will be held responsible for all material covered in class. Regular attendance helps ensure satisfactory progress towards completion of the course.

It is the student’s responsibility to complete a Withdrawal Form in the Admissions Office if they wish to withdraw from this class. The instructor may withdraw students from this class if their absences exceed 10% of the total number of class meetings. It is not the responsibility of the instructor to withdraw the students from their class even though the instructor has the prerogative to do so under the above listed circumstances.

Student Computer Files – Privacy

Instructor has the capability to view, but not edit/delete, the students’ computer files. Lab Technicians have the capability to manage all lab files. Instructors will view files for educational purposes.

The ACC on-line Blackboard system (or equivalent) and the ACCmail account are the official communication systems during the semester. Instructor expects students to check these information resources on a regular basis.

Anyone who thoughtlessly or intentionally jeopardizes the health or safety of another individual will be dismissed from the day’s activity, may be withdrawn from the class, and/or barred from attending future activities.
