A mixed bag of weather did little to deter the cream of the county’s track and field athletes from setting seventeen Championship Best Performances (CBP) and two County Records in last Saturday’s annual Cornwall Track and Field Championships, held at the Carn Brea Leisure Centre.
It was a case of déjà vu in the day’s top event, the Under 20 Men’s 4 x 400 metre relay, when a quartet of speedsters from Newquay and Par AC eclipsed the county record set by the club’s team last year by a significant 4.4 seconds, clocking 3 minutes 27.8. Three of the team members, Tom Harris, Jack Nancarrow and Kaya Carney were in the record breaking squad in 2016, joined his time by Joe Bacon. Harris also won the individual 400 metres event by (48.8), setting a new CBP by one tenth of a second.
In 2016 County Records were introduced for the Under 11 Boys and Girls age groups, so it was not surprising that six of the eight individual events produced new Championship Records last weekend, with Zoe Williams (Newquay & Par AC) sprinting to a record breaking double in the 75 metres (11.6) and 600 metres (1.57.2) races. In the Boys section Jed Hutchings, who runs for the City of Plymouth AC, was also in record breaking form in the 150 metres (22.10) and 600 metres (1.48.40).
The prize for the top athletic family at the Championships would have gone to the Cauderys from Cornwall AC, dad Stuart, son Fyn and daughter Molly. International pole vaulter Molly, the current UK number one in the Under 20 pole vault, was one of the day’s ten triple winners, taking advantage of the sunnier morning and early afternoon conditions, to win the 100 metre hurdles (15.4), the pole vault (4 metres 00) and the high jump (1 metre 67), equalling the Championship Best in the hurdles and setting new Championship Records in the pole vault and high jump. Fyn, also competing in the Under 20 age group, mirrored his sister’s achievements, with victory in the 110 metre hurdles (16.5), pole vault (4 metres 00) and high jump (1 metre 65). Not to be out done Stuart, returning to action after a break from competition, in the Veteran 50 category, won the100 metre hurdles in 15.9 seconds and high jump, clearing 1 metre 60.
In addition to the two younger members of the Caudery family, the day’s other triple event winners were Tia Smart (Mount’s Bay Academy) in the Under 13 100 metres, 200 metres and long jump, Lucy Allen (Newquay & Par AC), who won the Under 15 100 metres, pole vault and long jump and Kerensa Riley (Cornwall AC) whose three victories in the same age group came in the 75 metre hurdles, shot and javelin. In the Under 20 competition Georgia Doyle Lay (Newquay & Par AC) won the 400 metres, long jump and shot, setting a Championship Record in the throwing event. In the male age groups there were a couple of triple winners in the Under 13 category, Toby Piper (Cornwall AC) in the 100 metres, 200 metres and shot and Isaac Ketterer (Newquay & Par AC) in the 75 metre hurdles, discus and javelin. Throwing specialist Kieran Madden (Newquay & Par AC) completed this group with a hat trick ofvictories in the Under 20 shot, discus and hammer.
Special mention should be made of the tenth athlete to achieve a three gold medals, Abigail Birch (Cornwall AC) who competed in the F41 class for athletes with short stature, winning the Under 15 shot (3 metres 86) the discus (10 metres 49) and the javelin (10 metres 94).
One of the day’s most impressive performances came in the rain and gloom of the late afternoon, when Maisy Luke (Cornwall AC), in far from ideal conditions, not only stormed to victory in the Under 13 1500 metres but her time of 4.48.2 propelled her to the top spot in the Under 13 UK rankings for this event.
Rarely does the County Championships take place each year without Jacky Brett (Newquay and Par AC) featuring in the record books. At Carn Brea this time, Jacky, one of the county’s longest serving athletes, stepped up to improve her own Veteran 50 Championship Record in the 3Kg hammer , throwing 37metres 77, adding no less than 4 metres 13 to her 2016 distance. On this occasion it was great to see Jacky’s mum, Cynthia Fisher (South West Veterans AC), a former stalwart of Cornish athletics, in the same competition, launching the hammer 19 metres 30, winning in the Veterans 75+ age group.
