Peer Career Advisor and Student Assistant

Career Services executes a comprehensive strategy to deliver best-in-class career development programs and events to Occidental College students and alumni. These best-in-class services include contemporary career readiness programs for all students; donor-funded internship programs; and targeted employer and alumni relations programs.

The Peer Career Advisor and Student Assistant will report to the HCC Operations Manager, providing support to all areas of career services including Career Education and Advising, Operations, and Employer & Alumni Engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Peer Career Advisor (under the supervision of an experienced Career Counselor)

·  Gain a strong understanding of all career center technology and resources including Handshake, CareerShift, Vault

·  Review first-year and sophomore student resumes and provide feedback.

·  Assist first year and sophomore students with career planning

·  Train students to use Handshake and complete profile

·  Help engage students through peer to peer outreach initiatives

·  Facilitate group workshops on Mastering Your Handshake profile

Student Assistant

·  Provide information to all students who visit the HCC

·  Recommend appropriate career center resources to students

·  Promote the use of all HCC resources and technology

·  Participate on a variety of student panels for a variety of events held by Career Services

·  Serve as an ambassador for Career Services

·  Represent the HCC in a professional manner

·  Attend career education workshops to increase career knowledge and career preparation

·  Provide exceptional customer service at the front desk and for career center events

·  Assist career services staff with set-up for events

·  Review emails sent to the career center’s general email address and forward to the appropriate career services staff in a timely manner.

·  Assist career services staff on special projects, as needed.

·  Assist HCC staff with career education and programming.

QUALIFICATIONS

·  Open to all majors, Senior Level Experience

·  Work Study student desired, but not required for this position

·  Regular user of career center services and resources such as counseling appointments, walk-in appointments, completed Handshake profile

·  Has attended various career center events

·  Previous work experience desired, but not required

·  Must be comfortable providing guidance to other students

·  Friendly, outgoing personality

·  Ability to manage multiple projects at once and strong time management skills

·  Proficiency in MS Word and PowerPoint required

·  Proficiency in MS Excel preferred, but not required
