WELCOME TO 8th Grade Intermediate Computer Applications

WHAT KINDS OF THINGS WILL WE DO
Welcome to “Intermediate” Computer Applications. You are going to spend the next nine weeks using more of the software suites from Microsoft, plus a new program that will teach you all about protecting yourself when you are on the internet.

Below is a list of some of the categories of computer applications you’ll be learning about:

Presentations (Powerpoint) – This application will enable you to create presentations that you will design, enhance and present in class. This is one of the most powerful software tools around and one that you will use often.

Publications (Publisher) - This program allows you to make your own banners, posters, bulletin boards, calendars, etc.

Internet Security (My Digital Life) – This software will walk you through the many “traps” of the internet and show you how to protect your identify and personal information from viruses, hackers and unwanted businesses. It will also guide you through how to protect yourself from internet bullying

IF THERE IS TIME LEFT IN THE NINE WEEKS, WE ALSO WILL LEARN ABOUT;

Word Processing (Word) – Lets you type, edit and print documents

Web Design (Expression Web)– This is an introduction on how to create your own website.

WHAT PROGRAMS WILL WE BE USING?

You won’t be using one program; you are going to be using a variety of programs. Your main goal in this class is not to become an expert in “a” program; your goal is to explore the variety of ways you can utilize a computer.

WHAT MATERIALS WILL I NEED FOR CLASS?

You will use a variety of computer supplies (paper, ink, etc.), and a $1.00 lab fee will cover all of those.

HOW DO I MAKE UP MY WORK IF I AM ABSENT?

Since all of your work is to be “hands-on” there will be no homework!! You will be given ample time to complete all assignments in class.

WHAT TYPES OF ASSIGNMENTS DO YOU GIVE?

Your assignments for my class are primarily hands-on demonstrations of what you have learned to do with a program. Examples, when we study presentations, you will use the program to create a slide show of the many wonderful features in our United States, along with a presentation on some of the favorite people, places and things you enjoy. Also in the Publications section, you will create things such as a menu for a local business, a recipe that we will try and put together for our school to possibly bind together and sell. All assignments will include a scoring guide to help you in self-assessment for grading purposes.
