Crime Prevention Tips from the St. Matthews Police

Most burglaries and thefts are committed by criminals looking for a crime of convenience. You can help prevent this by taking the following steps:
1. Lock your doors and windows and close your blinds whenever you are not at home.
2. Do not leave any valuable items in your vehicles, especially in plain sight.
3. Always lock your vehicle, even if it is in your driveway or if you are only leaving it for a short time.
4. Contact the St. Matthews Police for a house watch whenever you leave for more than a day or two. This service is free to all residents of St. Matthews. You home will be checked by officers three times a day and we will contact you if anything seems amiss.
Most burglaries occur during day time hours while people are at work. The burglar will often knock on the door to see if anyone is home before they try to get in the house. If you see anyone suspicious knocking on doors in your neighborhood, please call the St. Matthews Police at 893-9000 so that our officers can check them out. If they have a legitimate reason to be going door to door, they will be on their way in just a few minutes and they will not know who called.

BBB KY State Fair Tips

Tips while at the fair:

Don’t give your information out to everyone who asks. There will be plenty of opportunities to enter your name and contact information into drawings for a number of prizes.By giving the promoter your name, phone number, and address, you could receive unwanted credit cards in the mail as well as unwanted phone calls from telemarketers.

Be aware, when you sign up to win a prize, you are establishing abusiness relationship with the company promoting the prize. The business may then contact you regardless of the no call list registration due to that relationship. The business also has an opportunity to sell their contact lists to third parties warranting even more annoying calls, emails, and mail.

Beware of new products on display. You may see the item on display as “the next best thing,” but be smart, and ask questions about the product, and the company selling it. BBB suggests asking the following questions:

·How long has the company been in business?

·Does the exhibitor have a telephone number and address where they can be reached should the product be defective?

·Is there a warranty or guarantee covering the product?

·How long is the product covered?

·If the product is defective, can the consumer get their money back or do they have to trade the damaged product for a new one?

·Can you get the refund or exchange policy in writing?

·Does the company have a good rating with BBB?

Guarantees may give consumers a false sense of security, as a guarantee is often only as good as the company that stands behind the guarantee.

Before consumers buy, they should check the product itself. Consumers need to make certain the materials and construction are up to the actual product's reputation. Also check the packaging. Does the item inside the packaging resemble what’s on the outside? The printing on the packaging or the actual construction for counterfeit products is often of poor quality and is a telltale sign the product contained is counterfeit. And remember, if the deal seems “too-good-to-be-true,” it probably is.

Walk With The Bridget Brigade

Join the Bridget Brigade as they walk united on September 13th to support and honor their mom and best friend, Bridget Keller Smith. Bridget was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in February of last year and she has shown nothing but courage, strength and grace throughout this difficult journey. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and is the perfect time for all of us to come together for a great cause. The Walk is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. at 501 Gatehouse Lane. Registration is $15 for adults, $10 for students K-12, and free for 5 & under or GYN cancer survivors. You can register the morning of the walk in person.

  • Many of you have asked what you can do to help. Well, this is your chance! There are many ways you can show your support:
    1. If you are in Louisville, you can participate in the Dee Edwards Memorial Whisper Walk for Ovarian Cancer, put on by OAK (Ovarian Awareness of Kentucky) to raise money and awareness for ovarian cancer. Registration is $15 and can be paid in person the morning of the walk. The Whisper Walk takes place Saturday, September 13th, 8am, at Douglass Hills Park, 501 Gatehouse Lane.
    2. If you're not in Louisville, check the list of official city walks.
