Tuesday 11th October
District Governor John Wigley addressed the club today on his official visit.
He expressed his pleasure to be visiting one of the stronger and older clubs in district 9800 and complimented us on our many achievements. He mentioned in particular our ongoing international projects in Yangong and the Philipines and our support for the rebuilding of East Timor.
John reminded us of RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar’s theme for this year-“Service above Self” and his emphasis on a return to Rotary basics and adherence to the four avenues of service.
He emphasised that the good standing Rotarians possess in the community makes them valuable members of the business community, as indeed rotary needs the business community and has personal relationships with it.
John, in discussing the importance of Youth, expressed a desire to expand the Rotaract Clubs, stating that it was a breeding ground for Rotary members. Vocational director Lisa Lowcock is a former Rotaractor and it is obvious that she is already well prepared for Rotary. District has as a goal the formation of five new Interact clubs this year, and at this stage has already formed three.
Along with the community projects, clubs must also place importance on membership recruitment and Member retention. Promoting rotary in the community is most important and should be done at all times.
John’s wife Fran addressed us at the end, presenting her personal program for the supply of pencils to students in East Timor, and the logistics of doing this from district 9800. She hopes to collect and send 1,200,000.
Next weeks speakers are Ray Mawson and FrankPagliaro who will present their man-behind-the-badge address.

We will also enjoy one of Australia’s largest bird sanctuaries and visit one of Victoria’s largest cattle farms.
