Romsey and Lancefield community consultation

The Victorian Government is committed to improvingpublic transport services so they better meet theneeds of metropolitan and regional Victorians nowand in the future.

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) invited residents inthe Romsey and Lancefield areas to provide feedbackon their public transport needs.

Who did we talk to?

We held a community consultation sessionon Thursday 6 October 2016 at the RomseyRecreation Centre.

Who participated?

Community consultation session

There were more than 50 participants at theconsultation session from Romsey and Lancefield.The participants ranged from school-agedstudents through to seniors aged 80+. We receivedapproximately 50 responses to the hard copy surveyduring the session.

Online consultation

Over 170 people visited the Romsey and Lancefieldonline survey page, and we received 70 responses.Respondents were of varying ages and came fromacross Romsey and Lancefield.

What did we talk about?

We asked what you thought about the current transport services in Romsey and Lancefield and how they are working for you, what the gaps in the network are and your ideas on ways we can improve local public transport. We also asked you about your travel destinations and the services you use.

What did we find?

About you

Residents from Romsey made up 68 per cent ofsurvey respondents and 30 per cent were fromLancefield. Less than 3 per cent were from othertowns in the area.

Respondents were mostly aged 31 to 55, making up58 per cent. This included parents completing thesurvey with their school-aged children in mind. Thoseaged 12 to 17 made up 15 per cent of respondents.

Of the 120 survey responses we received,49 respondents indicated they need publictransport to travel to and from school.

About your public transport needs

The main themes from consultation indicated thatmore public transport for Romsey and Lancefield isa high priority and this received very positive support.

In terms of preferred solutions, feedback was mixedwith a range of options suggested.

There was very strong support for services thatconnect Romsey and Lancefield and help customerstravel into Sunbury and Melbourne on a regular basis.

Feedback in support of a FlexiRide service similar tothe one recently introduced in nearby Woodend, ora local community bus for the Macedon Ranges areawas also well supported.

“I like the Woodend FlexiRide.A trial from Lancefield throughRomsey should be tried.”

“Romsey and Lancefield are growing.I’m currently residing in Romseyawaiting my new home to be builtin Lancefield. It’s super importantfor these towns to stay connectedwith Sunbury in particular. Thereneeds to be reliable services notjust for school children but also forresidents unable to drive suchas the elderly.”

What are the destinations most important to you?

Regular services to Sunbury and Melbourne weremost important, to connect the local communitywith key services.

How often should public transport services operate?

Community feedback told us that services runningevery hour to 90 minutes would provide reliable andeffective transport.

“Need more frequently run buses thatrun to the train stations so the kidscan actually get out for a couple ofhours, and not the whole day.”

Other feedback

A large number of respondents would like to seepublic transport services run for longer on weekendsand public holidays. In particular, last buses are tooearly for commuters coming back from Melbourne.

“The last bus from Sunbury on aweekday is 5.45pm. Surely we canhave later buses direct to Romsey.”

“The weekend timetable needsupgrading. It’s very hard to connectwith trains and no trains on aSunday, means I have to rely onsomeone taking me out.”

Tickets and fares were also a common themewith many respondents unclear on how theywork when travelling between the regionaland metropolitan systems.

Next steps

We’re considering the feedback received whichwill assist us in future transport planning.
