Directly Oversees and Evaluates:

Indirect supervision of EMT – Basic and/or Intermediate to assure appropriate patient care is initiated and maintained.

Interrelationships:

Acts as a representative of Calhoun County EMS to all persons contacted to include but not limited to patients and families, general public, physician, hospital and nursing care facility staff and other EMS and Non-EMS organizations.

Description:

Under limited supervision, performs highly responsible duties of rendering emergency care and transportation to ill or injured persons and transportation by ambulance to and from medical treatment facilities as directed by state law, statewide protocols, and the Standard Operating Guidelines set forth by Calhoun County EMS. The nature of the work requires extensive decision making abilities under pressure and also requires a calm, professional demeanor. Considerable health and physical strength requirements are necessary. Additional responsibilities include driving an ambulance; liaising with the law enforcement center, clients, families and allied professionals; and administrative and maintenance functions.

JOB DUTIES/KNOWLEDGE (20%)

Supr. Self-Eval.

1. Supports and up-holds the mission, goals and objectives of Calhoun County EMS at all times.

2. Provide quality basic life support care that includes all Basic Life Support (BLS) skills and Advanced Life Support (ALS) skills on patients in the pre hospital setting as indicated by the IA Bureau of Emergency Medical Services treatment protocols as observed or indicated on the Patient Care Report.

3. Interacts with other EMS, Fire and Police services as required to promote patient care and transportation.

4. Respond promptly to Calhoun County Law Enforcement Center Emergency dispatch. Adhering to Calhoun County EMS Dispatch and Response Time Guidelines at all times.

5. Responsible for insuring all documentation is completed accurately and legibly in accordance with Calhoun County EMS Guidelines for Patient Care Report Completion by the end of the assigned shift. This is to include all patient insurance information and vehicle inspection / maintenance reports.

6. Must perform all shift requirements of Calhoun County EMS.

7. Must be able to perform minor vehicle maintenance (fuel, fluids, air, wash vehicles etc.) on all vehicles as required.

8. Daily, or at the beginning of each shift, perform a complete inventory of each ambulance, including cleaning of the interior and washing the exterior.

9. Assist with training of area ambulance personnel, Calhoun County personnel, and public educational programs as assigned.

10. Assist with Emergency Management activities and 911 activities as assigned.

11. Assist with public health activities and duties as assigned.

12. Assist with child safety seat inspections.

13. All full-time EMT’s shall become CPR Instructors through the American Heart Association. Part-time EMT’s may become CPR Instructors

14. Additional specific job related activities required to assist the Emergency Medical Technician –Paramedic/Paramedic Specialist/RN level in performing the above essential functions are detailed in the Calhoun County EMS Standard Operating Guidelines

15. Thorough knowledge of emergency medicine theory and practice at the ALS level is required. Must have self-motivation for learning skills and knowledge and be aware of new developments in the field.

16. Thorough knowledge of IA Bureau of Emergency Medical Service ALS treatment protocols.

17. Must obtain thorough knowledge of Calhoun County EMS Standard Operating Procedures and Employee Handbook.

18. Thorough knowledge of streets and roads in Calhoun County.

Assessment, Ability, Attitude, Knowledge and Skills:

1. Ability to operate all vehicles in a safe and efficient manner. Demonstrate geographic knowledge of the service area and street locations.

2. The Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic/Paramedic Specialist/RN must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to all patients: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric according to the pre-established treatment protocols. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements as to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the appropriate Guidelines.

3.Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to proper procedures to follow in the event of a blood spill and the proper use and location of protective equipment.

4.The Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic/Paramedic Specialist/RN must be able to communicate appropriate information to the Medical Control Physician or E.D. staff in a timely manner. They must also be able to accurately implement physician’s orders according to Calhoun County EMS and state protocols.

5.Consistently demonstrate the ability to assess a situation, consider several alternatives and choose the most appropriate course of action.

6. Ability to perform strenuous duties under adverse conditions.

7.Must be positive, diligent and work cooperatively with colleagues and management. Must be punctual and perform all aspects of job responsibilities with honesty and integrity.

4.Due to the nature of the job requirements, Calhoun County EMS may require employees to report to work early, stay late, or work holidays and weekends. Some overtime may be required.

Qualifications / Certifications:

1. Education:High school or GED.

2. Certifications:

a. Current Iowa EMT – Paramedic/Paramedic Specialist/RN Certification

b. Current Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider CPR

3.Current Advanced Life Support card

4.Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support card

a. Needle Chest Decompression

b. Needle Cricothyroidotomy

c. Intraosseous Infusion

5. Other certifications or training requirements as required by law, regulation or the guidelines of Calhoun County EMS to include but not limited to:

a. Driver Training

b. Bloodborne pathogen education (Annual)

c. Hazardous Material Training. (Recognition and Identification)

d. Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Training

e. NIMS Awareness

f. ICS 100 & 200

6.6 Months EMS experience at the EMT Intermediate level or higher preferred but not required.

7. Successfully pass CORI (Criminal Offense Records Inquiry).

8. Current Iowa Class D Chauffeurs driver license without serious moving violation.

Degree of Travel

Travel required for various activities and between local ambulance departments. Must have reliable transportation and required liability insurance.

Degree of Disruption to routine

Disruption to routine is to be expected occasionally.

Anyone who scores 2.9 or above on the Physcial Capacity Evaluation will be able to retake the PCE exam two (2) weeks (at a minimum) after the first exam was taken - at county expense. If the person does not score at least a 3.0 on the second exam, employment will not be offered. There will be a waiting period of at least six (6) months before re-application.
