St Lawrence Jewry August and September 2014 Newsletter

St Lawrence Jewry is the church on Guildhall Yard, dedicated to bringing

the light of Christ to the City of London.

Dear Friends,

“Come to me, all you who arewearyand burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:27-29 NIV)

We hope that all of you who had their holidays in August are now feeling refreshed and renewed, some might even display a tan. August, in general, was the holiday month for most people in the City. Most city churches were also closed. But our church remained open and held a successful August Music Festival. Thanks to Graham Allum and his wife, Sarah Walker, for organising it all. Thank you also to our volunteers, Jenny Houghton, Ian Lightfoot and Marites Anatel for being there and helping out, most especially when Arnel and Ian were in the Vergers’ Conference. The Friends of City Churches were also present and sent watchers too. It was a huge success that the church was full during the last concert on Friday 29th August. People were already looking forward for August 2015, with our main theme focusing on Beethoven.

Music

We return to our regular weekly piano and organ recitals this month. Programmes are now available online via our Piano and Organ webpages. Printed copies can be availed in our vestibule.

Services each week

We also resume our weekly services. Holy Communion at 8.30am on Wednesday and 1.15pm on Friday. Morning Prayer at 8.30am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Love must be in the air again this September because we have three weddings booked:

2nd September – 3:00pm - Duncan Law – Colette Lagueux

6th September – 2:00pm - Simon Seagroat – Shereen Rooproy

Then on Thursday 25th September, we will have a special Memorial Concert to celebrate the life of Robin Eve, one of our prominent Common Councilman of the Ward of Cheap, where the church is located.

Summer Mosaics Exhibition

Come along and celebrate work by Southbank Mosaics’ artists, students and volunteers with the this year’s theme “The Learning Process”. Works by the Southbank Mosaics team and our very own artist-in-residence Sue Parrott, are featured in this exhibition. A couple of the exhibits are already sold. It will run until 21st September.

Support Us webpage

We created a webpage in our website to inform people how they can help St Lawrence Jewry in fulfilling its missions of bringing the light of Christ to the City of London. Please do visit our Support Us page and get involved.

Since we launched our easyfundraising.org.uk page last November 2013, we already generated £141.53 for the church with 8 supporters. If you are buying anything online, including holidays, or are planning to buy something in the future, please register in easyfundraising.org.uk and choose St Lawrence Jewry as the charity you want the retailers to donate to. Examples of the +2,000 retailers included are Tesco & other supermarkets, Amazon, The Trainline and many others. It is really easy once the toolbar has been set up. It will not slow your shopping down. It will simply mean the church gets a donation in the process.

As part of generating funds, we are liaising with DCD Philatelics, to collect used stamps. If you receive letters with stamps on the envelopes, perhaps you can tear off the used stamps and send them or drop them off in the church. This will not raise not much but every little helps. Stamps should be left on the backing paper, with a border of about 4mm to 8mm left around the stamp (this is meant as a guide only).

RIDE + STRIDE 2014, Saturday 20th September

This is a nationwide fundraising event and St Lawrence Jewry is participating again to help raise fund for the church and the preservation of London’s unique historic buildings and monuments. We need volunteers who will act as riders, striders or stewards in this event and get sponsored for it. Please visit our Ride+Stride webpage for more details on how to support us. Our Administrator/Verger, Arnel Sullano, will also do the riding and striding for us. To sponsor him, please visit St Lawrence Jewry Church’s fundraising webpage. His target is to raise £1,000 for this event.

LONDON OPEN HOUSE, Saturday 20th – Sunday 21st September

The church will open our doors for this year’s London Open House weekend on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September from 10am to 5pm to welcome the thousands of visitors expected on that weekend. There will be a series of brief historical talks, mosaics live demonstrations, children’s church trail (with prizes), coffee, tea and biscuits.

We are looking for volunteers to help us welcome our visitors that weekend. If you can spare some of your time, then please contact Arnel Sullano.

Lord Mayor’s Election Day Service

The Lord Mayor’s Election Day service takes place on Monday 29th September at 10:45am. This is one of the great Civic events of the year, when all Masters of Livery companies & Aldermen with their respective beadles process from the Great Hall of the Guildhall to the church to seek spiritual guidance from God before electing a new Lord Mayor. It takes a lot of organising. Again please pray for this key event in the life of our church.
