Competitors shall have knowledge and understanding of:

- Identify and use appropriate personal protective equipment at all times
- Select and handle appropriate substances, materials and equipment safely and in compliance with manufacturers specifications
- Dispose of substances and materials safely and sustainably
- Prepare and maintain an orderly work area
Competency / Logical order of repair
Competitors shall have knowledge and understanding of:
- Organising and implementing appropriate decisions regarding maintenance and repair operations
- The significance of following a set procedure
- The methods best suited to complete the task

- Organise and implement decisions regarding maintenance and repair operations in a logical manner
- Adopt best methods to carry out the maintenance or repair operation
Competency / Use and interpretation of technical information
Competitors shall have a knowledge and understanding of:
- The purpose and use of the range of technical information in paper and electronic format
- How to reference, interpret and extract technical information from all formats
- How to apply technical information in the repair or maintenance operation
- How to use technical language associated with the repair or maintenance operation
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
- Use test equipment to measure, check and diagnose management systems for electrical/electronic and mechanical faults
- Perform tests to identify, confirm and isolate a fault
Competency / Precision Measurement
The competitor shall have knowledge and understanding of:
- The range of diagnostic and measuring tools and equipment availablein automotive repair
- The correct use and interpretation of relevant diagnostic and measuring tools and equipment available in automotive repair
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
- Calibrate and use all measuring devices and equipment (mechanical, electrical and electronic) for diagnostic fault finding and measurement
- Interpret readings and measurements to identify faults/wear and make decisions on serviceability of components and systems
Competency / Fault finding
The competitor shall have knowledge and understanding of:
- The range of faults and their symptoms in heavy vehicle components and systems
- The range and use of diagnostic methods and procedures
- The importance of regular maintenance and inspection to minimize faults in components and systems
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
- Select and use appropriate equipment and tools to diagnose faults in heavy vehicle components and systems
- Apply results of diagnostic testing to identify and isolate faults
- Calculate, check and interpret test results as required
Competency / Appropriate use of tools
The competitor shall have knowledge and understanding of:
- The purpose, application, correct handling and storage of tools and equipment used to maintain and repair heavy vehicles
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
- Choose and correctly use, maintain and store tools and equipment used to maintain and repair heavy vehicles
Competency / Maintenance and repair of components and vehicle systems
The competitor shall have knowledge and understanding of:
- Vehicle mandatory inspection processes
- The range of procedures and specifications for maintenance and repair of:
- Compression ignition engines
- Braking systems
- Body electrical/electronic systems
- Drive trains
- Heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
- Steering and suspension systems
- Vehicle mandatory inspection processes
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
- Follow recommended procedures to meet manufacturers specifications for the maintenance and repair of vehicle systems
- Review the options for repair or replacement of components
- Carry out repair and maintenance procedures according to manufacturers specifications
Competency / Communication of maintenance or repair process
The competitor shall have knowledge and understanding of:
- The importance of clearly and accurately recording technical information in written and electronic formats
Standards / Competitors shall be able to:
- Accurately record information regarding the maintenance or repair process
Note: Core Competencies are tested, identified and measured as recognition of the competition level and duration. The severity of the marking schedule is regulated in relation to WorldSkills international standards as follows:
National Qualifiers circa 50%
- National Final circa 75%
- Team UK selection 100%
