PHILOSOPHY
The Plano Senior High School Golf Program (Coaches and Student-Athletes) projects an image of high level competitors that embrace the challenge of their sport, integrity, history, respect for our competition, discipline, the ability to win, and the grace to handle defeat. It is through these efforts, golfers involved in our program exhibit qualities of positive role models and academic achievement. Therefore, the goal of our golf program is to be the benchmark in which all teams in Texas set their standards.
I strongly believe that interscholastic athletics is an integral component of the total educational structure. While I will strive to make our teams as competitive as possible, our primary objective is to help our student-athletes acquire important skills that will help them to be successful in their adult lives. Our efforts as coaches will be focused on teaching our athletes how to win and not just on winning. Golf requires extreme concentration and dedication in order to see improvement.
Our program places a high value on the power of participation, involvement in junior golf tours, and spending adequate time with a PGA teaching professional. Within our educational setting, every effort will be made to provide the ultimate competitive golf experience for all. Our competitive teams will be selected on the basis of scoring and competitive abilities. I will place student-athletes on teams appropriate to their current playing/qualifying abilities.
Both coaches will strive to be positive role models who display in-depth knowledge of the game of golf, an ability to teach, strong leadership, ethical behavior, and interest in holistic development of each player. Winning of championships should transpire as an outgrowth of ethical coaching and healthy competition.
The desired outcome for participants in our golf program is that they will attain the following traits.
Ability to set and achieve goals
Competitiveness
Teamwork
Commitment
Self-discipline
Sportsmanship
Responsibility
Work ethic
High self-esteem
Self-confidence
Accountability
Respect for self and others
Leadership
Ability to deal with adversity
Pride
Ability to communicate
Academic achievement
Graciousness
Finally, I also hope that, during their high school experience, our student-athletes will have fun and build fulfilling relationships. The product of our investment in golf will be healthy adults who contribute to their community in a positive manner.

TEAM SELECTION AND QUALIFIER INFORMATION
The Varsity golf team will be made up of the best Top 5 players as deemed fit by lowest tournament scoring avg, qualifier place, and attitude. Coach O’Kelley will have the ultimate authority to place any player in the Top 5 at any given moment. Varsity players will be guaranteed 7 tournaments + District tournament per school year
The Junior Varsity will consist of positions #6-16. JV players will have the opportunity to play for a Top 5 position during qualifiers and tournament score. Tournament scores are only relevant if yardage is 6000+. JV players will be guaranteed 6 tournaments per school year;
District Tournament is per Coach selection.
Qualifiers are used to separate competitors from inconsistent play. Format and course location is the sole discretion of Coach O’Kelley. It is the player’s responsibility to know the specific rules, dates, locations and length of qualifier. Any missed round will DQ a player.
NOTE: Seniority will never be a factor in determining ladder position – it is all based on 3 components: stroke average, qualifier results, work ethic.
