Elective Course Descriptions:
Beginning Band:
In Beginning Band, students may begin instruction on trombone, trumpet, clarinet or flute. This full-year course focuses on the basic technique of playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Students will also learn how to play their instrument by reading standard musical notation. Participation in performances that occur outside of the school day is required. Home practice is expected.Students must provide their own instrument. Second semester, students can audition for saxophone, tuba or percussion. Beginning Orchestra:
In Beginning Orchestra, students may begin instruction on Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass. We learn a variety of musical styles including classical and fiddle. All students need to have their own instrument which they can rent or buy from a music store. The school also has instruments to rent for a reduced amount. We learn to play with proper instrument technique, to read notes and rhythms and expand our musical knowledge for a more fulfilling experience. We do two concerts a year. Choir:
In Choir, students learn and perform many different songs from different cultures and time periods. This course is open to all students who like to sing. Students will learn basic music reading skills, including rhythm and notes. The choir department has four concerts at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center each year. Elective Rotation:
Students will attend 4 different classes over the course of the year. Classes may include:
- Civics
- Grossology
- Introduction to Technology
- Literature and Film Analysis
- Survey of Natural Parks
- World Studies
**AVID Strategies:
Students will learn to use Advancement via Individual Determination strategies for organization, note taking, and college preparation which incorporates teaching/learning methodologies in the following critical areas: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to Learn.
