Kick off the new year with a brand new tournament!

Dardanelle High School Sand Lizards are pleased to invite you to the 2015 DHS Sandbox Speech and DebateTournament on Friday, January 15th and Saturday, January 16th, 2016.

In the following packet you will find a schedule of events, tournament expectations and a listing of local hotels.

Sweepstakes will be determined using the new squad efficienty method. Sweepstakes will be made available to the top three schools in both large and small school divisions. It should be noted that this is not a Junior High Invitational.

The deadline for entries is Monday, January 11th, 2016 by 4:00 p.m. If you need assistance completing your entry, please contact We would appreciate any school that is planning to attend let us know before the Christmas break so that we know how many people to plan for.

You must provide one qualified judge for every ten individual event entries and one qualified judge for every two debate teams. A $10 judge fee will be assessed for uncovered entriesto pay hired judges for last minute changes/uncovered roundsand will be enforced.

Rounds

Instead of offering multiple events at a single time and having the students rush from room to room. We will be holding three rounds OF THE SAME event simultaneously. The students will be placed in a speaking order that will have most of them as one of the first speakers in their first room, among the middle speakers in their second room and among the last speakers in their third room.

We are expecting people to look at their speaker number in each room and try their best to get to the rooms in the appropriate order. We are hopeful that this method will allow us to offer multiple preliminary rounds for each event while still keeping the tournament on schedule. We will be capping entries into each event at 32 and they will be filled on a first come and first serve basis. We will reserve several spots to keep the pool diverse enough to reach qualifying status however.

  • Rounds will be scheduled for for an hour and a half
  • We will limit each round to 8 competitors
  • Each room will be within a 1-2 minute walking distance from each other

Student Congress

We will be taking bill submissions for our Student Congress competition. Bills are due by Monday, January 3rd, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. Bill submissions must follow NSDA format and should be submitted to The NSDA bill template can be found here. Multiple bill submissions are allowed however they must be sent in priority order and the first two from each school are given precedence before additional bills will be added to the schedule. Students may enter student congressas a consolation event on Saturday for $10.00 at the door.

Debate Events

Because of the size of our school several debate events WILL NOT BE OFFERED. During our initial year we will not be offering Policy Debate (CX) or Lincoln Douglas Debate (LD) Debate. We will be offering three different types of debate that will be broken into two divisions with enough participation. Those events are IPDA Debate(Limited to 64 entries combited with Varsity and Novice), Public Forum Debate (PF limited to 16 teams) and NSDA Congressional Debate.

Individual Events

All NSDA event rules must be followed. Please consult NSDA event standards and rules carefully.

The following events WILL NOT BE OFFERED: Duo Improv, Mime, Readers Theatre, Words and Music

All NSDA Events, except for Extemp(IX, DX), will occur on Friday.

ACTAA Events (Storytelling, Prose, Poetry) will occur on Saturday Morning.

Each round will receive three prelims and advance to appropriate elimination round.

Judging

Schools are expected to bring the appropriate number of judges to fulfill judging commitments. We reserve the right to limit entries or assess fees if commitments are not fulfilled.

You must provide a cell number for every judge entered. Please be very clear about judge availability.

High school graduates of any age may judge any event, however we expect program directors to make informed discretion about judge qualifications. It is the responsibility of all coaches to ensure that all forensics judges are familiar with NSDA event rules and guidelines.

Double Entry

We have tried our hardest to offer a unique opportunity that gives the student as much flexibility as possible.

However, any student signed up for IPDA / PF Debate will not be allowed to enter any NSDA event that is held on Friday. They are encouraged to sign up for Extemp (held on Saturday) or any of the ACTAA events (held on Saturday). No student signed up for Extemp or CONGRESS may compete in ACTAA events on Saturday to avoid schedule conflicts.

Multiple entries are encouraged. The schedule is made in such a way that it is possible to enter every NSDA event and all ACTAA events with very minimal overlap. (Only overlap should be Oratory Semi-Finals and Storytelling preliminary rounds)

There may be conflicts during the outrounds. As the tournament advances, students may have to choose between events. Every effort will be made to make sure advancing students have the opportunity to compete in their outrounds.

ACTAA JUDGES’ AGREEMENT

First, and foremost, thank you for giving your time to our students. Your willingness to watch their performances and offer meaningful feedback is invaluable. All judges at ACTAA TOC qualifying tournaments must:

  1. Not curse or use suggestive language that is either directed at or in the presence of students.
  1. Not verbally critique individual performers, rather fill the ballot out completely, including comments. Oral critiques in debate should be kept to a minimum (5 minutes) and should not replace written critiques on ballots.
  1. Remember that ballots are intended as instructional documents; please add criticism and praise in ways that a student can grow and learn, not be belittled or insulted.
  1. Acknowledge that, per Arkansas state law, smoking and vaping are not permitted on school grounds.
  1. Be attentive throughout the entire round/performance. Please limit your use of electronic devices to emergency situations. If you must exit the room before the round is complete, please wait for the current speaker/performer to finish and return as quickly as possible. Early departure from the tournament must be communicated with the judging table.
  1. Consider the rules of the event when ranking students, assigning speaker points, and/or determining winners.
  1. Ensure that all competitors are given an opportunity to perform. Please do not leave your round until all competitors have performed, the allotted time for the round has elapsed, and/or you have been given permission to leave by the judging table or tournament director.

Please acknowledge that you have read and agree to follow these guidelines by signing below. Thank you again for your time and adherence to these expectations.
