GENERIC JOB DESCRIPTION

POST TITLE:Deputy Head Achievement and Progress

LINE MANAGER:Headteacher

All teachers at The Ravensbourne School are viewed as both leaders and managers of the academic and pastoral curriculum.

ROLE is defined as:

“Under the direction of the Head Teacher, formulate aims and objectives of the school, establish the policies through which they will be achieved, lead staff and manage resources to fulfil the aims and objectives, and monitor progress towards their achievement”.

LEADERSHIP is defined as:

“Identifying and articulating the shared values of the school. Leaders then implement these values and the organisations’ vision for the future through planning. At this school, leadership is not solely located behind one person’s door. It is a shared, collective responsibility to lead the school in the formulation and implementation of its values. The school will seek opinions and canvass for involvement on strategic issues. It is expected that at this level of responsibility, the postholder is aware of the nature of leadership and contributes as much as possible.”

MANAGEMENT is defined as:

“Working with individuals and teams to achieve tasks. It is a means to an end. At the most fundamental level, every time we enter a classroom we are managers of the learning process. Others have additional management roles. The point is simple: we are all managers of the education process.”

LEADERSHIP:

  • To lead and undertake any job at the reasonable request of the Head Teacher.
  • Hold an active membership of the Leadership team.
  • Undertake the professional duties of the Head Teacher, in the event of his absence from the school.
  • Maintain a visible profile around the school, including learning walks, evening and week-end events.
  • To keep abreast of developments in education and to ensure that the school adapts to necessary changes.
  • Challenge any low expectations from staff, students or parents.
  • Develop a school ethos which enables everyone to work collaboratively, share knowledge and understanding, celebrate success and accept responsibility for outcomes.
  • Contribute to the whole school self-evaluation process.
  • Support the leadership of STEM and PLTSs within the school.
  • Line manage key areas within the school at the Head Teacher’s discretion.

MANAGEMENT:

  • To be responsible for the day to day running of the school and to oversee arrangements for major events.
  • To lead break duty team and participate in lunch duties.
  • To chair meetings for staff within your area of remit and ensure that a record is kept of points discussed.
  • To report to relevant committees of the Governing Body.
  • Manage whole school systems to positively influence student progress.

LEARNING AND TEACHING:

  • To monitor the quality of learning and teaching through regular learning walks.
  • To facilitate and positively encourage learning which enables students to achieve high standards, to share and support the corporate responsibility for the well-being, education and discipline of all children.
  • Evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of achievement, setting targets for improvement
  • Provide regular feedback for colleagues in a way which recognises good practice and supports their progress against professional and performance management objectives resulting in a tangible impact on students learning.
  • Support staff in using the VLE as an effective learning tool.

ATTAINMENT:

  • To develop, implement and review a procedure for personalised target setting for each student.
  • Be accountable for student progress.
  • Develop intervention strategies for underachieving students
  • To be fully involved in developing a target setting strategy for each cohort in each Key Phase.
  • To establish, through consultation, a series of time related milestones at which student progress will be evaluated in all Key Stages.
  • Ensure that data at identified milestones has integrity in terms of showing student progress against relevant national and internal baseline data.
  • Analyse the progress data and prepare reports for LT.
  • Support school improvement by ensuring that departments are targeting results that are significantly above national figures, add value (irrespective of student context), represent year on year improvements in student progress.

STUDENT OUTCOMES AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:

  • Support the school and staff to implement the behaviour for learning policy by overseeing the day-to-day conduct of student behaviour.
  • Promote the development of SMSC activities across the whole school.
  • Ensure all progress data is analysed on a number of levels which will include: SEN, gender, FSM, ethnicity.

CURRICULUM:

  • Be responsible to the Head Teacher for the delivery of the agreed curriculum at the highest possible academic standards.
  • To ensure that all students are following a relevant, challenging curriculum.
  • Keep up to date with changes in educational theory and subject requirements.
  • Oversee curriculum monitoring within your area of remit.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT:

  • Regularly review own practice, set personal targets and take responsibility for own professional development.
  • Undertake INSET as appropriate to enable “best expert” status in all areas of responsibility.
  • Provide INSET for staff as necessary, in the full range of responsibilities of this post.
  • Provide support and encouragement to all staff in the school.
  • Ensure that an active working party enables staff to develop and experience whole school roles.
  • Manage your team in such a way that staff are able to lead within the team and disseminate best practice.
  • Act as a mentor/coach for staff on a wider range of issues.
  • Lead and manage the monitoring and evaluation of the quality of staff performance and to ensure faculty members take a full part in the school’s performance management systems. Rigorously revisit performance management targets and challenge where appropriate.

PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATION:

  • Collaborate with other schools and organisations in order to share expertise and bring positive benefits to TRS.
  • Work with the Head Teacher to engage and work collaboratively at both strategic and operational levels with parents and carers and across multiple agencies for the well-being of all children
  • To assist in the promotion and marketing of the school and in maintaining good publicrelations with the wider school community.

RESOURCES:

  • Work with the Head Teacher to provide effective organisation and management of the school and seek ways to improve organisational structures and functions based on rigorous self-evaluation.
  • Work with the Head Teacher to ensure the school and the people and resources within it are organised and managed to provide an efficient, effective and safe learning environment.
  • Oversee and evaluate the subject/area budget allocation to ensure the budget is spent in line with subject/area learning priorities and best value principles.
  • Secure and allocate resources to support effective learning and teaching within subject/area(s).
  • Prioritise spending from the interventions budget to fulfil attainment targets.
